G. w. PIGOTT ET AL WRENCH Filed March 24, 1924 Patented Mar. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. PIGO'IT, CHARLES P. PIGOTT, REUBEN H. PIGOTT, AND LEEMAN I1. SHINN,
OF WEST UNION, WEST VIRGINIA.
WRENCH.
Application filed March 24, 1924. Serial No. 701,572.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Gnonon W. Preo'r'r, CHARLES P. Prco'r'r, REUBEN H. Proo'rr. and Lauren L. SI-IINN, citizens of the United States, residing at test Union, in the county of Doddridge and State of lVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in a Wrench, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a wrench, and the object of the invention is the construction of a simple and eilicient wrench tor-med, preferably, in one piece, and including elements whereby nuts ot' dii'lierent size can be easily clamped and screwed upon or unscrewed otl bolts, and the like.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, our invention (omprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 represents a view in elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the wrench.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, l is the handle, upon one sid and one edge of which is formed a scale 2, which scale is very useful as affording a rule for measurement, by the user of the wrench.
Integral with the handle 1 is a head 3, and integral with head 3 is a primary jaw t and an auxiliary jaw 5. These jaws are provided with a concave, inner surface 6, against which nuts hear, when the wrench is in operation.
{in the outer end of primary jaw t is formed right-angled portion 7, and on the outer end of portion 7, and extending slightly inwardly is a cam portion 8. Cam portion 8 is serrated or toothed on its outer face for more efliciently engaging nuts 9 and 10 (dotted lines).
It will, therefore, be. seen that we have provided a Wrench with an auxiliary jaw that is of a slightly curved structure Whereas the primary jaw is provided with an inwe. dly-extending portion terminating in a cam for engaging and clamping the nuts when it is desired to screw anut upon, or unscrew the same from a bolt.
It is to be noted that the inner face 11 ot. the port-ion T is straight and fiat so that it constitutes one of three surfaces that will snugly bind against nut 10, whereby the nut is etlicicntly held for operation. The three sur races are the concave surface 6, the toothed surface of cum portion 8 and the straight surface 11. However, the nut 10 can be easily removed from the wrench by reversing the movement; that is, by unscrewing the nut. as the unscrewing action lessens the clamping pressure on the nut within the socket, constituted by the several surtaccs just specified.
lVhile we have described the preferred embodiment of our invention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawing, ertain minor changes or alterations appear to one skilled in the art to wh h this invention relates, during the e.\1- teusi e manufacture oi the same and we. therefore, reserve the right to n eke such alterations or changes shall Fairly fall within the scopeoi" the appended claim.
ll iat we claim is:
1' cle ot maiurtacture, a wrench iandle provided with a sub- Ushaped head integral at its cenh a uling across the outer end parallel with the longitudinal axes of the handle, said primary jaw provided with a straight portion at right angles to said jaw and handle, said straight portion provided with a straight. tla t wit-engaging inner face for snugly receiving an entire side oi? a nut, and a cam portion at the outer end oi? said straight portion, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereoi we hereunto afiix our signatures.
GEORGE W. PIGOTT. CHARLES P. PIGOTT. REUBEN H. PIGOTT. LEEMAN L. SHINN.
