Description

Y Mar. 3; 1 925.
,1. HORRIDGE MACHINE FOR comsmg COTTON, WOOL, AND THE LIKE Filed May '5. 192's Patented Mar. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES,
JAMES HORRIDGE, OF BOLTON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN HETHERINGTON AND PATENT OFFICE.
SONS LIMITED, OF MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
MACHINE FOR COMBING COTTON, WOOL, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 5, 1923. Serial No. 636,821.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES HORRIDGE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Bolton, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Machines for Combing Cotton, lVool, and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in or relating to machines for combing cotton, wool and the like, and has for its object to provide improved means for adjusting and actuating the nippers.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 is a partly sectional side elevation of a mechanism embodying the features of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a detail side view, broken away, of the means employed for opening the nippers and Figure 3 is a similar view of the means for adjusting the bottom nipper.
Referring to Figure 1, 1 represents the cyliuder shaft upon which is mounted an eccentric 2 embracing which is a strap 3 having a rod 4. which is connected with an arm 5 mounted upon the nipper shaft 6 by which means a rocking or oscillating motion is imparted to the latter.
Also mounted on the nipper shaft 6 is an arm or lever 7 which is connected with the nipper arm 8 which carries the nippers, by izieans of a link 9 by which means said nippers are moved to and from the rollers 10.
In the position of the arm 7 illustrated by the dot and dash lines it will be seen that said arm is at or about dead centre with re lation to the connection ofthe link 9 with the arm 8, which in combination with the dead centre of the eccentric 2 and strap 3 gives a very prolonged period of rest during the combing operation.
In Figure 2 the means employed in conjunction with the device last hereinbefore described for opening the nippers is illustrated.
.6 represents the nipper shaft upon which In the oscillation of the shaft 6 the cam 12 depresses the roller 15, thus opening the nippers to the desired extent. I
In Figure 3 is illustrated in detail the means employed for adjusting the bottom nipper. In said figure, 8 represents the bot tom nipper arm and 16 represents the bottom nipper which is mounted upon a body or carrier 17 which is adapted to slide vertically upon a suitable surface or slide 18 formed upon the nipper arm 8 upon the end of which is a horizontal bracket 19 through which passes a bolt 20 the lower end of which is fixed to the body 17 and threaded upon the bolt 20 above the bracket 19 is a nut 21 by screwing up which the bolt 20 and therefore the body 17 and nipper 16 are raised, a lock nut 22 being provided to fix said bolt and therefore the nipper 16 in the position to which it has been adjusted.
By these means the nippers may be adjusted and are actuated in such manner that a long dwell or rest is provided while the combing operation is proceeding.
lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2- 1. In a machine for combing cotton, wool and the like means for actuating the nippers comprising arms mounted upon the nipper shaft and connected with the nipper arm by links, an eccentric upon the cylinder shaft a link having an eccentric strap embracing said eccentric, the other end of said link being adjustably connected to an arm mounted upon the nipper shaft, the arrangement being such that during the combing operation said arms will be in a horizontal position at dead centre and therefore at rest, 7
thus producing a prolonged dwell during the combing operation substantially as herein set forth.
2. In a machine for combing cotton, WOOl and the like, means for opening the nippers, comprising a bracket carried by the nipper shaft, a cam adjustably carried by said bracket and an antifriction roller upon the top nipper arm the arrangement being such that in the oscillation of the nipper shaft the cam depresses the roller and therefore the end of the nipper arm thus opening the nippers to the desired extent substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
