J. HORRIDGE MACHINE FOR COMBING COTTON, WOOL, AND THE LIKE ATT'Y 1,495,743- u. HORRIDGE MACHINE FOR- COMBING COTTON, WOOL, AND THE LIKE May 27 1924.
Filed May 5, 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 maa/! 17 6)/ 77@ ATTy JAMES HORRIDGE,
E BOLTON, ENGLAND, ASSIG-NOR T0 JOHN HETHERINGTON AN'IDv SONS LIMITED, 0F MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
MACHINE FOR. COMBING COTTON, WOOL, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed May 5,
England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Machines for Combing Cotton, Wool, and the like, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in or relating to machines' for combing cotton,
wool and the like and has for its object to provide'an improved device for weighting the detaching rollers of combing machines whereby the weighting of all said rollers 13 may be instantly relieved at one operation at the times desired.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of weighting mechanism constructed according to the present invention and Figure 2 is a similar view to Figure 1 illustrating a modification.
Referring to Figure 1,-1 represents the back Vdetaching rollers of a combing machine 4and 2 represents the front rollers. 3 represents an arm or lever which is pivotally mounted at its lower end by means of a stud 4 upon an arm or lever 5 which is pivotally mounted at 6 upon the framing of the maso chine and said lever 3 is at its upper end furnished `with a hook 3a which hooks onto the back detaching rollers 1 and suspended from the arm or lever 5 by means of a rod 7 or 'it might be a chain, is a weight 8 which a5 through the arm or lever 5 and lever 3 eX- erts a downward pressure by means of the hook 3a upon the back detaching roller 1.
The other or front detaching rollers 2 are weighted by means of the weight 9 which by means of a rod 10 is suspended from the saddle 11 which rests upon said front detaching rollers 2 whereby the necessary degree of pressure is applied.
Pivotally mounted upon the same aXis as the lever 3 is a lever 12 which at one end is provided with an arm or extension 12a and at the other end with a handle 12b by means of which said lever 12 maybe operated and the arrangement is such that `when the attendant lifts the handle 12b the end of the extension 12' engages the frame of the machine and becomes the fulcrum of said lever 12 and in said lifting movement the pin 4 is raised thus lifting the lever 5l and consequently the weight 8, lever 3 and hook 3a 192s. serieu No. 636,818.
thus removing the pressure of thevweight 8 from the back detaching roller 1.
Upon the rod 10 is cast or otherwise fixed therewith a V shaped block or knife edge 10a ing movement ofthe lever l3the block or rest 3b engages the block orv knife edge 10a and lifts the weight 9 by which means all three rollers l and 2 are relieved by one and the same operation of lifting the handle 12b.
Referring to Figure 2, a modification of the weighting arrangement above described is illustrated.
I-Iere the knife edges l()b and 3e are shown extending in a direction at right angles to those shown in Fig. 1.
In this case the lever 3d is furnished adjacent its upper end with a flat or bearing surface 3c which in the lifting of said lever engages or rests upon the cylinder shaft of the machine the object being to support and guide said lever 3 in its movement.
In this arrangement also the rod 13 instead of being straight as shown in Figure 1 is in this case cranked at its upper and lower ends so as to avoid the framing carrying the detaching rollers. l
In other respects the construction is identical with that shown and described with respect to Figure 1.
It will be understood that the details of construction of the device may be further modified without departing from the principle of the invention.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a combing machine, having front and back detaching rollers, a weighted arm pivotally mounted uponV the frame of the .Y
machine, a stud carried by said arm, a handle for manual operation pivotally mounted upon the stud, a lever pivoted at its lower end on the said stud, the upper end of said lever forming ahook and adapted to embrace the back detaching roller, a saddle carried by the front detaching rollers, a rod resting at one end thereof upon the saddle and at the other end carrying a weight, and engaging means carried by said lever and rod for simultaneously releasing pressure on the frontv and back detaching rollers when the lever is manually operated.
2. In a combing machine having front and back deteching rollers, a Weighted arm pvotally mounted upon the frame of the machine7 e stud carried by said arm, a handle for manual operation pivotally mounted upon the stud, a lever pivoted at its lower end on the said stud, the upper end of seid lever forming a hook and adapted to embrace the beck detaching. roller, a saddle carried by the front detaching rollers7 a rod resting at one end thereof upon the saddle and at the other endcarrying :i Weight7 and blocks secured to said lever -and rod for bringing them into engagement with one another for simultaneously releasing pressure on the front and back cletaching rollers.
3. In a combing machine having front and back detaching rollers, a Weighted arm pivotally mounted upon the frame of the inechine7 a stud carried by said arm, a handle memes for manual operation pivotelly mounted upon the stud, e lever pvoted et its lower end on the seid stud, the upper end of seid lever forming a hook and adapted to embrace the back detuching roller, u saddle carried by the front detuching rollers, a rod resting at one end thereof upon the saddle and at the other end carrying a Weight, engaging means carried by seid lever and rod for simultaneously releasing pressure on the front and back detaching rollers when the lever is manually operated, and u. bearing surface curriedby said lever adjacent to its upper end for guiding said lever in its movement.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification.
JAMns Hommes.
