UNTTED STATES PATENT UFFIGE.
JAMES JOLLY, OF BOLTON, AND PERCY EUING WILLIS, OF CHEQUERBENT, BOLTON, ENGLAND.
COMBING-IVIACHINE.
Application filed January 23, 1913.
T 0 all 107mm it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES JOLLY and PERCY EUING WILLIS, both British subjects, residing, JAMns JOLLY at Bolton, county of Lancaster, England, and PERCY EUING IVILLIS at Cheouerbent, Bolton, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to combing machines in which two pairs of detaching rollers are mounted so as to approach toward and recede from the top comb or nipper. In these machines the roller bearings are carried by a reciprocating bearing moved to and fro on the frame, or are carried by an oscillating arm.
This invention consists in giving to the top (leather or other) detaching roller a reciprocating movement separate from and independent of the reciprocating movement of the bottom detaching roller. but in a direction approximately parallel therewith. in addition to a rising and falling movement consequent upon traveling over the surface of the bottom roller.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of detaching rollers and comb cylinder showing the relative position of the rollers when farthest removed from the cylinder. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation showing the relative position of the'rollers when nearest to the cylinder. Fig. 3 is an elevation similar to Fig. 1 showing a modification. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing a further modification.
The bearings A of the bottom detaching rollers B and C and of the top detaching roller C are mounted in a slide on the frame or on an oscillating arm G. and reciprocated by the rod A, which latter is operated by an eccentric or cam, in the manner shown and described in our prior Patents Nos. 875,932 and 947,070, granted. respectively, January 7, 1908, and January 18. 1910.
A rocking shaft a runs longitudinally of the comber head and is mounted in the re ciprocating bearing A to move to and fro with them. T o the rocking shaft (1, levers D are connected. through which levers by the cam E, a rocking motion is imparted to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1915.
Serial No. 743,851.
the shaft a independently of the reciproeating motion received from the rod A, the shaft whereon said cam is mounted being so timed that the reciprocation of the members A and (Z corresponds with the movement of the comb.
To the rocking shaft a for each comber head two levers D are affixed, to each of which an arm d is pivoted. At the extremity of each arm d a bearing is formed for the journal of the top (leather covered) detaching roller B. The arm (Z rests upon the roller end and is weighted a weight hook F and weight IV.
The arms d are preferably placed above the rollers, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and formed with bearings to embrace the .iournals of the rollers, though they may be placed beneath the rollers as in Fig. 8, in which instance they are provided with fiat faces against which the journals of the roller B rest, the roller being held in position by the direction of pull of weight hooks F from which weights IV are suspended.
In the case in which the bearings A of the rollers I5 C and C are carried to and fro, by rocking or oscillating arms G, (Fig. 4), a lever D is mounted on a rocking shaft (1 to which an oscillating movement is given in any suitable wav, such as by an arm or lever D and cam E. To the lever D the arm (Z carrying the bearing of the roller 13' is pivoted.
The rocking or oscillating movement of the shaft and the reciprocating movement of the arms cl or d are imparted by the cam E, shaped and timed to give the desired movement to the roller B, independent of the movement of the lower roller B. The cam is so shaped as to give to the top roller I3 a double or single to and fro movement over the top of the bottom roller B and also to allow it to rise and fall to some extent over the face of and in front of the bottom roller B to engage the detached end of the sliver for piecing up.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In a comber, the combination, with top and bottom detaching rollers, bearings therefor, and mechanism for reciprocating said bearings; of mechanism connected with the bearing of the top detaching roller for imparting to the latter a reciprocatory movement which is separate from and independent of the reciprocatory movement of the bottom roller.
'2. In a comber, the combination, with top and bottom detaching rollers, bearings therefor, and mechanism for reciprocating said bearings; of a rock shaft mounted in said bearings for movement therewith; means for operating said shaft; levers affixed to said shaft; and arms pivoted to said levers and carrying the bearing of the top detaching roller, for imparting to the latter a reciprocating movement Which is separate from and independent of the reciprocatory movement of the bottom roller.
3. In a comber, the combination, With top and bottom detaching rollers, bearings therefor, and mechanism for reciprocating said bearings; of a rock shaft mounted in said bearings for movement therewith; an actuating member connected to said shaft; a cam for rocking said member; levers affixed to said shaft; and arms pivoted to said levers and carrying the bearing of the top detaching roller, for imparting to the latter a reciprocating movement which is separate from and independent of the reciprocatory movement of the bottom roller.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing Witnesses. v
