COMBING-MACHINE FOR COTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
Application filed September 12. 1904. Serial No- 224.162.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES JOLLY and PERCY EUING WILLIs, British subjects, and residents, JAMEs JOLLY, of Bolton, county of Lancaster, England, and, Pnnov EUING i/VILLIS, of Atherton, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombing-Nfachines for Cotton, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for combing cotton fibers known as the Heilmann comber and is designed to simplify the construction of certain parts of the machine and to obtain more efficient working of the machine.
It consists essentially in mechanism for effecting'the working, that is the raising and lowering of the top detaching rollers direct from the nipper shaft, comprising a combination of suitable levers connected therewith and in dispensing with the separate cams and levers hitherto employed for the purpose.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings Figure 1. Transverse sectional elevation of the operative parts of the comber. Fig. 2. Perspective view of the parts comprising the invention.
In carrying out the invention the main parts of the Heilniann comber are of the ordinary construction but we dispense with one cam shaft and the cams thereon and the levers hitherto employed for raising and lowering the top detaching roller G. The nipper shaft A'the cam A for actuating it and the cam -lever a are also constructed as heretofore. To the nipper shaft A we affix (one for each pair of combing heads) an arm or lever B which oscillates with the shaft and is capable of adjustment. A bracket B is screwed or keyed fast to the shaft and provided with a pin or stud 1) upon which the lever B is pivoted and is held rigidly in position by two set screws 1) one on either side. The position of the lever relatively to the shaft A is adjusted to a limited extent in either direction by the set screws b. These set screws 6 project through lugs at either side of the bracket B. v
The lever B on the nipper shaft A is adjustably connected with a lifter lever D mounted upon the lifter shaft d which latter is journaled in. hearings in the usual way, so that the movement given to the lever B by the nipper shaft A is transmitted to the lifting lever D and the detacl'iing roller G. The connection between the lever B and the lever D is effected by means of a stud E adjustably affixed to the end of the lever B, (onwhich is a bowl or runner) which takes into a groove fin the face of an adjustable disk F fitted on the end of the lever D. The position of the stud F- in the end of the lever B is preferably made adjustable to vary the throw of the lever D as may be required. The disk F is fitted onto the lever D and is made in two parts one of which is provided with a groove f to receive the end of the stud E and the other part is affixed to the lover D, its posi tion on the lever D nearer to or further from the fulcrum, that is the lifter shaft (1, can be adjusted as may be required. The part of the disk F carrying the groove f is affixed to the other part by a bolt or screw so that the inclination of the groove relatively to the lever D can be altered and adjusted as required. The lever D at its upper end carries the top detaching roller G and as it is oscillated by the lever B the roller G is moved to and from the cylinder H. By altering the position of the part of the disk F carrying the groove f relatively to the lever B the duration of the dwell of the top detaching roller upon the fluted segment of the cylinder can be regulated either longer or shorter. To the lower end of the lever D or to the disk F a band or chain is attached passing over a pulley to support a weight, the weight being such as to balance the detaching rollers, being about equal to that applied to the rollers. By this construction we are able to regulate or control the duration of the dwell of the top detaching roller upon the fluted segment to suit any class of cotton or obtain any desired percentage of waste, also we obtain much better piecings and lighter running of the machine, the even ness and strength of yarn being greatly improved. I
What we claim as our invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a combing machine the combination with the cam A the cam lover a and the nipper shaft A, the nippers, connected with the shaft A and the detaching rollers G, of an adjustable detaching device operated by the nipper shaft comprising an additional lever B fitted upon the nipper shaft, a detaching lever connected therewith and mounted upon the detaching shaft, and the detaching shaft I two parts and provided with 'a groove in one d which serves as a fulcrum for the detachface and a pin E on the lever B which takes ing lever, substantially as described. into the groove in the face of the disk sub 2. In a combing machine the combination l stantially as described.
