JOINT FOR SYRINGES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed March 23, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD WV. Bononnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowville, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Syringes and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to joints or connections, and while especially intended for a joint between the bulb of a syringe and the metallic parts, is obviously not limited to such instrument. An object of the invention is .to provide means for securely clamping a yielding member such as a syringe bulb in associationwith metallic parts of a device such asa barrel or nozzle of a syringe, whereby the parts are maintained in operative relation.
A further object of the invention is to provide in combination with a yielding or resilient member, a stud and nozzle. the latter conforming to the configuration of the yielding member with complementary inclined grooves and shoulders adapted to wedgingly clamp the yielding member therebetween when stress is applied for accom plishing such clamping purpose.
" l Vith these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel units, elements, parts, combinations and functions as are disclosed in the drawing, together with mechanical equivalents thereof.

parts by the operation of which fluid is forced from or by the yielding or collapsible member through the rigid or metallic member for various purposes. As shown in the drawings, a bulb 10 is employed substantially spherical in general outlines, but it is to be understoodthat sphericity is not essential to. the present invention and that the shape of the bulb may differ therefrom, and any reference herein to spherical or spheroidal is only intended to be a convenient term to indicate a hollow collapsible bulb.
Associated with the bulb 10 is abarrel 11 which in the particular instance is connected or integral with the nozzle 12. The bulb 10 is provided with an opening through which astud 13 is inse ted, the stud being provided with screw threads which are engaged within the barrel 11, the barrel acting as a nut upon the stud 13. The stud 13 is provided with a head 14 having at the side adjacent the stud an annular groove having walls 15 and 16 inclined to the axis of the stud 13, so that the groove is approximately or substantiallyV-shaped in cross section radially of said head.
A washer 17 is provided having an opening to receive the stud 13 and in the type illustrated is substantially a spherical segment larger in diameterthan the head 14 and by reason of its said shape its perimeter overhangs and surrounds said head, said head lying wholly within said washer and stopping short of the base thereof. Its formation as a spherical segment depends upon the sphericity of the bulb 10 and is made to conform to the convexity of such bulb, irrespective of its sphericity. About the central opening which receives thestud 13, an annular shoulder is provided having walls 18 and 19, which in normal relation are parallel to the walls 15 and 16 of the head 14 and therefore also V-shaped in cross section radially of said washer. Owing to the fact that the walls 15 and 16, as well as the walls 18 and 19 are inclined to the axis of the stud 13, it is obvious that by clamping the head 14 and the washer 17 together, an interposed yielding member would be clamped with a wedging action between said complementary walls. The formation of the walls of the groove of the head 14 and of the rib of the washer 17 complementary and inclined is very important to the proper clampthe bulb 1O therebetween.
