Description
Z4.. i825- Y 1,527,244 W. DE L. WHITNEY HARROW POINT Original Filed Jan.A lg, 1922 w Wfl in @y rl l.,
Patented Feb. 24, 1925..
UNITED STATES WILLIE DE LANO WHITNEY, OF HOLLEY, NEW YORK.
HARROW POINT.
Application filed January'181922, Serial No. 530,118.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ILLIE D. VVHTTNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holley, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Harrow Point, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to a reversible harrow point or tooth and is designed mo-re particularly as an improvement upon the structure disclosed in Patent No. 1,400,118, issued to me on Dec. 13, 1921.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide impro-ved means for attaching the point to a standard, said attaching means being so constructed that the parts will be held properly assembled. In the structure heretofore patented the point has been surrounded by a continuous loop or frame which could not be applied to the point without requiring the services of a skilled mechanic.
It is an object of the present invention to utilize a yoke which can be placed in position readily on the point and which has combined therewith a removable head having a clamping member for holding the parts assembled tightly.
lWith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the reversible point and its fastening means, a portion of the standard being shown by bro-ken lines.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 ure 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a reversible point of is a section on line 3-3, Fig- Renewed July 18, 1924.
the type illustrated in my patent hereinbefore mentioned, this point being provided at its center with a transverse recess 2.
A yoke 3 is adapted to straddle the intermediate portion of the point, the central portion of the yoke being designed to rest within the recess 2 as shown at f1 so that its front or exposed face will be substantially flush with the corresponding face of the point. The arms of the yoke 3 diverge rearwardly as shown at 5 and are adapted to receive between them the standard S to which the point is to be attached. Formed at the free ends of the arms are inwardly extended lips 6 designed to project into recesses 7 formed in the end portions of a head 8. This head is insertible between the arms 5 and carries a set screw 9 extending through the central portion thereof.
In applying the fastening means to a point the yokel 3 is placed astride the point so that the arms 5 will extend rearwardly. If necessary these arms can be hammered slightly toward each other so that after the yoke has once been applied the lips 6 will prevent it from being withdrawn from the point. The head 8 is then inserted between between the arms after which the standard S is positioned between the head 8 and the back face of the intermediate portionof the point. Set screw 9 is then tightened and the lips 6 will become seated in the recesses 7 and all of the parts will be securely fastened together.
Obviously the fastening means herein described can be applied readily to a tooth or point without requiring the services of a skilled mechanic. v
IVhat is claimed is 1. The combination with a reversible harrow point having a central transverse depression, of a yoke seated within the depression, a removable head insertible between the arms of the yoke, clamping means carried by the head for engaging a standard inserted between the head and point, and cooperating interiitting means upon the arms and head for holding them assembled while a standard is clamped to the point.
2. The combination with a reversible harrow point having atransverse depression, of a yoke stladdlng the point and seated in the depression, inwardly extending lips upon the arms of the yoke, a detachable head insertble between the arms and recessed to receive the lips, and a set screw carried by the head.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto axed my slgnature in the presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIE DE LANO WIIITNEY.
