2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- 11? 1Q 17 I /am New,
WILLIAM FRANKLIN CLAYTON, OF CULLMAN, ALABAMA.
ROLLER-FENDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1921.
Application filed September 22, 1919. Serial No'.'325,521.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. CLAYTON, citizen of the United States, residing at Cullman, in the county of Cullman and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller- Fenders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plow fenders and particularly to rotary fenders therefor and means for attaching the said rotary fenders.
An object of this invention is to provide a means for quickly and simply attaching and detaching a roller fender and especially to also provide a means of utilizing the common means of attachment of a scratcher to a plow for the purpose of attaching a roller fender to a plow.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction, combination and the detail and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plowwith a fender-attachment.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of a fender attachment strap.
Fig. 3 is a perspective or attachment device 3 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section through a roller fender with a mount attachable to strap 2, strap 2 being shown in sections.
Fig. 5 is a perspective of an attachment to strap 2 where it may be desired to utiliz a double set of roller. fenders.
Figs. 6 and 7 are a side elevation artly broken away of a scratcher showing a ender attached to a scratcher and illustrating how strap 2 can be substituted into a means for attaching the scratcher.
In detail, the invention comprises a strap 2 attached to an attachment member 3. the said strap 2 perforated at 4: with a boltl5 adapted to pass through the said perforation. A clamp 6, conforming to the contour of strap 2 and adjustably mounted in a slot 7, cooperates with the adjustment of bolt 5 in a slot 8 to properly govern the relative angularity of the said fender to the said attachment means. The attachment member 3' is afiixed to a'plow beam 9 by a clamp 10. Slidably mounted on the strap 2 is a clamp 11, clamp 11 being mounted upon an L shapedmember 12 having a'support for a stud shaft 13 which carries a roller fender 14. Where two roller fenders are desired to be used a clamp 11 is perforated-as at 13 and 13 to support a pair of said shafts 13.
"Where it is desired to attach a roller fender of this character to a scratcher, the
scratcher spring strap 15 can be removed.
and a bolt 16 utilized for the same purpose as bolt 5, and clamp} 17 can be utilized for the same purpose as clamp 6, thus rendering the said scratcher spring strapinterchangeable with the said strap 2, or if de- 7 sired, the scratcher strap itself can be utilized for supporting the said fender.
By this simple interchangeable device ity is obvious that the construction is very much simplified for mounting-the said fenders-to devices in common usage.
What I claim is: In an interchangeable attachment for earth working implements, a fender member, a fender supporting means comprising a depending portion to which the fender member-is attached, and a lateral portion at the upper end of said depending portion; and a binding clamp carried by said lateral portion, said binding clamp being constructed and designed to embrace and be frictionally clamped, interchangeably, to a flat metallic bar of a standard earth scratcher, or to a bar of like dimensions attached to a plow or other earth working implement. g
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. WILLIAM FRANKLIN CLAYTON.
Witnesses:
ALBERT Gr. BAIN, WILLIAM E. JAMES.
