HARROW-POINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 13, 1921.
Application filed November 8, 1919. Serial No. 336,545.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIE DE LANO WHIT- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holle in the county of Orleans and State of New ork, have invented a new and useful Harrow-Point, of whichthe following is a specification. I
This invention relates to an improved harrow point or tooth and more particularly to one of the reversible type and improved fastening means therefor.
The invention is in particular, an improvement upon my Patent No. 730,725 of June 9, 1903, and therobject thereof is to secure greater efiiciency in the retention of the tooth or point in position in the clip constituting means for attaching the point to the beam or shank of the harrow or cultivator.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides inthe combi-- nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved harrow point and fastening means.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4; is a fragmentary vertical sectional view at right-angles to Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 5 designates a shank or beam to which the point 6 is adapted to be secured. This point is double ended and of tapering formation at its ends, while the intermediate part is provided with a concave bulge 7, at opposite edges of which are provided recesses 8 the end walls 9 of which extend at right-angles to the inner edge walls thereof.
Communicating with one of the recesses 8 is an intermediate recess 10 of very small length compared to the length of the recesses 8 and extending a distance into the width of the point at its intermediate portion. This construction is designed to cooperate with a clip 11 having a transverse convex bar 12 to engage the bulge of the point whereby to facilitate the attachment of the pointand prevent it from shifting between the bar of the clip and said shank. The clip is'in the form of a frame having a transverse portion 13 provided with a threaded aperture for receiving a clamping screw or the like 14: or other suitable cooperating means for exerting pressure between the parts when assembled, while also permitting quick separation of the parts so that the point can be reversed in position when desired.
The clip is further provided with side arms 15 and 16 engaging therecesses 8 so as to prevent turning or vertical displacement of the point in addition to the construction alreadyvdescribed. The transverse bar at its inner or convex face adjacent to the arm 15 is provided with an inwardly extending lug 17 preferably formed or cast integral therewith and engaging the recess 10 so as to more securely hold the point in the clip and keep it from slipping vertically or otherwise. Thus, the point can be reversed in position when one end is worn and thereby increase the life and effectiveness of the harrow more than twofold.
Having thus described the invention, what V is claimed is 1. The combination with a clip constituting a fastening member and having a transverse bar; of a double ended point having side recesses receiving the sides of the clip adjacent to said bar, a lug projecting inwardly from the bar adjacent one side, said point having a recess communicating with one of the aforesaid recesses and receiving said lug therein.
2. Atooth for cultivating implements having a transverse concave bulge, in combination with a clip constituting a fastening member and having a transverse convex bar to engage said bulge, said tooth having a side recess of relatively small width and a lug projecting inwardly from the bar and engaging said recess, said recess and lug being of rectangular formation.
8. Atooth for cultivating implements having pointed ends, said tooth having side recesses, a clip in the form of a frame having a transverse bar engaging the forward face of the tooth, side arms and a connecting por- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as tion, clamping means between the connecting my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature 1 0 portion and the rear face of a shank enin the presence of twe witnesses.
