Description

J. WEIGEL. FINGER BAR AND GUARD. APPLICATION FILED Nov. 24, 1908.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
Mmmm
m H l, Isll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH WEIGEL, OF FLANDREAU, SOUTH DAKOTA.
FINGER BAR AND GUARD.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH INEIGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flandreau, county of Moody and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finger Bars and Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cutter bars and 3 guards.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a finger bar and guard connection which will insure absolute rigidity of the guard, permit rapid and easy attachment or detachment thereof to the finger bar, obviate the necessity of using fenders and thus reduce the tendency of the sickle to gum and render possible the attachment of the invention to an ordinary finger bar.
The invention is set forth hereinafter and the novel features are recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a iinger bar equipped with a guard constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section through the connection, the guard being shown in full lines; Fig. 3, a bottom view of the guard end and the seat in the guard bar to receive the same; Fig. 4, a cross-section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2; and Fig'. 5, a detail perspective of the bottom of the guard end.
An ordinary finger bar is shown at 1 and the guard for the sickle at 2, said guard being of ordinary construction except at its attaching part, which is provided on its upper face with a shoulder 3 and a fiat surface 4, and on its under side it has a concavity 5. Disposed centrally of the concavity 5 and extending' through the guard is an aperture 6, and bisecting the aperture and concavity and extending longitudinally of the guard is a slot 7 which preferably tapers as it extends toward the end of the guard. The end of the guard is of dove-tailed shape, having beveled side edges 8, as shown in Figs. 3, and 4, and the guard end is widest at its extremity and tapers inwardly therefrom to the shoulder 3.
In order that the invention may be readily applied to any finger bar, I prefer to use a guard plate 9 extending lengthwise of the sickle bar, under the same. The guard plate 9 is provided with under-cut or dove-tailed seats 11 on its under face corresponding in Specification of Letters Patent.

shape to the dove-tailed or under-cut form of the end of the guard, but of slightly less width than said guard end. rlhrough each seat extends an aperture 12 corresponding to the aperture 6 and adapted to aline therewith when the guard end is seated, as shown in Fig. 2, at which time the shoulder 3 abuts the bars 1 and 9. When thus seated, the parts are connected by a bolt 13 whose head lies on top of the finger bar 1 and on the shank of which is a nut 14 having a convexed inner face 15 adapted to fit the concavity 5.
To facilitate introduction of the guard end into the seat 11, it is provided with beveled parts 16.
In using the invention, the ends of the guard fingers are first inserted in the mouths of the seats 11, the bevels 16 permitting easy insertion. The inherent resiliency of the bifurcated end of the guard linger causes the said end to snugly conform to the seat 11, as it is easily driven home in the seat by any suitable implement. On inserting the bolt 13 and screwing the nut 14 into concavity 5, the nut exerts a spreading action on the guard end, further causing a snug engagement of the beveled sides S with the side walls of the concavity 11.
The guards are secured against movement in any direction and do not become loosened from use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a finger bar and guard, the combination with a bar having an under-cut seat, of a guard having an attaching end conforming to the shape of the seat and provided wit-h a bifurcation and a concavity intersected thereby, a bolt passing through the bar and concavity, and a convexed nut on the bolt which is received in the concavity.
2. In a finger bar and guard, the combination with a bar having an under-cut seat, the walls of which diverge from the mouth of said seat inwardly, of a guard having an attaching end shaped correspondingly to said seat and provided with beveled corners permitting its ready insertion in the mouth of the seat, said guard end being bifurcated, and means for securing the guard end in the seat.
3. In a finger bar and guard, the combination with a bar having an under-cut seat, the walls of which diverge from the mouth of lil said seat inwardly, of a guard having an attaching end shaped correspondingly to said seat and provided with beveled corners permitting its ready insertion in the mouth of the seat, said guard being bifureated and having a concavity intersect-ed by said Abifurcation, a bolt passing through the bar and through the bifurcation and eonc'avity, and a convexed nut on the .bolt which is received in the concavity.
4; In a finger bar and guard, the combination with a bar having an under-cut seat,
ingly to said seat, and means for fastening the said guard end 1n the seat.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOE VEIGEL.
