UNITE S JAMES M. WARDLOW, OF ADA, OKLAHOMA.
HOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, E914.
Application filed December 16, 1913. 7 Serial No. 807,067.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M. IVARoLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ada, in the county of Pontotoc and State of .Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hoes, and it has for its object to provide a simple and efiicient construction whereby blades of various kinds and sizes may be interchangeably applied to and connected with a handle.
A further object of the invention is to produce a blade supporting head of simple and improved construction, whereby a blade may be supported at various angles with respect to the handle carrying the head.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple, durable and efiicient handle attachment adapted to be securely connected with the handle and adapted to have a blade detachably connected therewith.
\Vith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of. the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifica tions within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing,'Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hoe constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a front end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail view, enlarged, taken on the line 44 in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view showing the component parts of the device separated from each other.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of refsides with longitudinal slots 18 which extend from the head to the rearward extremity of the sleeve.
19 designates a fork having a forwardly extending threaded bolt portion 20 which is adapted to lie partly within the sleeve with its forward end projecting through and beyond the face 17, the limbs or side members of the fork being accommodated in the slots 18 of the sleeve. An ordinary wooden handle 21 is adapted to be inserted within the sleeve between the limbs or side members of the fork 19, said handle being secured by fastening members, such as nails or tacks driven through the side members of the fork and also through the solid portions of the sleeve intermediate the slots 18, said fastening member being seen at 22. The bolt portion 20 of the fork which projects beyond the face of the head 16 is provided with a nut 23, with a wedge-shaped washer 24 which, when inposition, will present one face at substantially right angles to the axis of the bolt, and with a headplate 25 having at the upper edge thereof a flange 26 adapted to engage and be seated in the recess 27 at the upper edge of the head 16.
In connection with the improved attaching device a plurality of blades B are provided, several such blades of different dimensions being shown in Fig. 5. These blades may be of various dimensions and of any desired shape or contour, each blade being provided on the rear face thereof adjacent to its upper edge with spaced plates or flanges 28adapted to receive the head 16 between them to prevent a rocking movement of the blade when placed in position. Each blade is also provided intermediate the plates 28 with a notch 29 adapted to engage the bolt portion 20 without necessity for en tirely removing the nut, the head plate and the washer when a blade is to be detached or replaced. In assembling the improved device for operation, the fork 19 is placed on the handle, together with the sleeve 15, with which it cooperates to form a ferrule or socket in which one end of the handle is accommodated. The washer 2d, the head plate 25 and the nut 23 are next successively mounted on the bolt portion 20 in the order named, after which, butbefore tightening the nut, a blade is adjusted between the face 17 of the head 16 and the wedgeshaped washer 24, or between the latter and the head plate 25, according to whether it be desired to mount the blade obliquely or substantially at right angles with respect to the axis of the handle. The head 16 will be included between the plates 28 of the blade which will thus be prevented from rocking about the axis of the bolt, and the nut 23 is finally tightened so as to assemble the parts securely together. It will be readily seen that in order to replace the blade with another one or to change the position of the blade, it is only necessary to loosen the nut, thus permitting the blade to be slipped out from its present position, after which it or another blade may be replaced in the desired position and secured by simply retightening the nut.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:-
1. In a device of the class described, a sleeve having a head, a fork associated with the sleeve and, having a threaded shank extending through and beyond the head, and fastening means on the shank.
In a device of the class described, a sleeve having a head and provided with longitudinal slots extending rearwardly of the head, a fork engaging the slots and having a threaded shank extending through and beyond the head, and fastening means 30 on said shank.
3. In adevice of the class described, a socket member including a sleeve having a head, and a fork having a threaded shank extending through and beyond the head, 35
fastening means on said shank, in combination with a blade provided with a notch to engage the shank and with flange plates to receive the head between them.
In a device of the class described, a 40 sleeve having a head provided with an inclined face and with a recess along its upper edge, a fork engaging the sleeve and having a threaded shank extending through and beyond the head, a head plate on the shank 45 having a flange engaging the recess in the head, and a tightening nut on the shank; in combination with a blade having a notch to engage the shank and provided with flange plates to receive the head therebeto Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
