HANDLE CONNE C T I ON Filed July 21, 1925 Patented June 4, 1929 JOHN E. WALTON, OF NORBECK, SOUTH DAKOTA.
HANDLE CONNECTION.
Application filed. July 21, 1925. Serial No. 45,056.
This invention relates to handle connections and it is an ob ect of the mvention to provide a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in.
connection with forks and more particularly in connection with a fork having a broken tang.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character which is adapted to be directly attached to a handle and provided with means whereby the same may have rigid connection with a fork. The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combinationand arragement of the several parts of my improved handle connection whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating a handle connection constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position, the holding bolts being shown in section;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1 Fighre 3 is a View in inner face elevation of one of the members comprised in the connection.
As disclosed in the accompanying draw ings, H denotes a handle of a type generally employed in connection with forks and which has riveted, as at 1, or otherwise secured at opposite faces thereof the elongated members or plates 2. The outer end portion of one of the plates 2 is provided with a cross head 3 disposed beyond the adjacent end of the handle H, said cross head having its central outer margin provided with a forwardly directed extension 1 said outer margin of the head 3 at opposite sides of said extension being provided with inwardly directed flanges 5. The inner marginal portion of the head 3 at opposite sides of the plate or member 2 is arranged on a suitable curvature to provide the proper positioning of the transversely spaced openings 6.
These curved edges are alsoprovided with the inwardly disposed flanges 7. The extension 4 hereinbefore referred to is provided with an opening 8 positioned substantially midway of the openings 6 hereinbefore referred to.
The outer end of the-second member :or
plate 2 is also provided with a cross head 9 the extremities of which being provided with the forwardly directed extensions 10 while the central portion of said cross head 9 is provided with a forwardly disposed extension 11 provided with an opening 12 in register with the opening 8 hereinbefore referred to.
The adjacent end of the handle H is provided with an axial recess or bore 14L. In practice, the tang T of a fork Fis received within the recess or bore 14 when the handle is applied thereto with said tang either complete or broken.
The cross heads 3 and 9 are arranged at opposite sides of the head 15 of the fork with the extensions 4 and 11 projecting therebeyond and with the extensions 10 coinciding with the inner portions of the central or intermediate tines of the fork F. The flanges 5 engage the forward portions of the head of the fork as does also the forward marginal flanges 16 of the head 15, said flanges 16 alsoextending along the inner margins of the extensions 10. A bolt 17 is disposed through the aligned openings 8 and 12 in the extensions 4 and 11 and with which is engaged a nut 18. Upon proper turning of the nut 18 the heads 3 and 9 are tightly clamped upon the head of the fork with the bolt 17 forwardly of said head. Bolts 19 are also disposed through the openings 6 hereinbefore referred to and the aligned open ings 20 in the cross head 9, said bolts being positioned inwardly of the head of the fork. Engaged with these bolts 19 are the nuts 21 which provide further means for effectively clamping the heads 3 and 9 upon the head of the fork.
To remove the fork F from the handle H, it is only necessary to remove the bolt 17 and to sufliciently loosen the nuts 21 on the bolts 19.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a handle connection constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from theprinciples and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
In combination with a'fork including a handle carrying a head member arranged transversely thereof and having outer and intermediately spaced tines, of means for fastening the handle and head together comprising plates secured to the opposite sides of the handle, said plates being provided with cross heads in advance of the handle and adapted to clamp the head of the fork therebetween, means for clamping the cross heads to the head of the fork, one of said cross heads being of greater length than the other and extending beyond the opposite ends of the second cross head, the longer cross head terminating beyond the outer edges of the intermediate tines and provided with downwardly disposed extensions embracing the rear side of the tines, both of the cross heads and the extensions of the first named cross head having flanges overlying the head of the fork and intermediate tines.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
JOHN E. WALTON.
