Be it known that HARRY HARVEY, a citizen of the United Benito, in the county of Cameron and State of Texas, has invented certain new and use'- ful Improvements in Handle-Securing De-4 vices, of which the following is 'a specification. Y

This invention relates lto new and' useful improvements in a handle securing device f and more particularly relates'to an improvement over the handle securing device covered by Patent :it/:1,196,683 obtained by me August 29, 1916.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a Vmeans whereby the handle associated with the eye of any tool such as a hoe, axe, pick, will be secured therein in such a manner as to prevent any possibility of the handle from becoming dis engaged therefrom while in use, said means being furthermore of suoli a construction as to enable the same `to be placed uponv any of the above mentioned tools without-haw ing to use any part of the tool in connection with the securing means.

A still further object o-f Ithe invention isto provide a handle securingmeans whieh may be readily and easily placed in position upon the tool and handle therefor and which` is of such a construction whereby Athe sai-ne is detachably associated with the tool npon which itis used.

A. further object o'f the invention lis to provide a handle securing device which is simple iii construction, strong and durable and further well'adapted for the pur-poses for which it is designated.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

however, in the use of a tool similar to that lherein referred to that the handle will cidentallly become loosened from its sea-ted position within the socket and thereby necessitate having toforce the larger end of the handle back into the socket, thus causing a considerable loss of time andsometimes injuring the person using vthetool. i f

In order to overcome this diiiiculty and to 8 furthermore enable any tool having a socket for the purpose of receiving a handle Yto be supported in a locked position upon the f handle at all times, I provide a detachable handle securingI means which comprises a substantially elongated metallic plate such as is shown at l in the drawings and which is: furthermore provided with an aperture adjacent each end thereof, designatedby the numeral 5. In use, the plate e is adapted to extend across the outer face of the enlarged end of the handle 3 and also across the outer face of the hoe blade 1, preferably across the intermediate portion of the outer edge of the socket and the ringwill fit over the portion of the'handle 3 adjacent the rear end of the socket and with the parts arranged as thus described suitable fastening means such as bolts or the like, and as further shown at 8 no in the drawings, are adapted to extend through the registering apertures in the plate and ring, respectively, in suoli a manner as to have the heads of the bolts engaging the outer face of the plate and the threaded ends Which extend through the apertures 7 of the ring 6, receiving on the outer ends thereof the locking nuts 9. .The nuts 9 are tightened on the bolts 8 so as to draw the plate tight against the outer face of the enlarged end of the handle and also drawing the ring 6 up against the rear end of the socket, it being further understood that the bolts 8 Will be tangential to the rea-r edge of the blade l, as shoivn in Figs. 1 and El ofthe drawing. n

In this manner thehandle is securely held vcithin the socket of the tool and the fastening means will in no way interfere with the proper use of the tool and furthermore will not necessitate the alteration of any part of the tool in order to permit the fastening means to be placed thereon. -It Will thus he seen that any type of tool having a socket thereon for receiving a handle will be adapted to support my fastening device in a simple and eiiicientnianner and furthermore permit the same to be readily and easily placed in positionthereon, it being understood that the fastening device is entirely separate and independent of either the handle or the tool with which it is associated, thus rendering the same detachable and ready for use at all times. Y

From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, it Will be seenthat I have provided a simple, inexpensive and e'liicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.

Having thus described my invention What I claim is:

l. In a device of the class described, the combination with a. tool head having a tapering socket, the one end of said socket be- I ing liush ywith the one face of the tool and a handle member having an enlarged tapering end adapted to fit within the tapering socket to permit the extreme end to extend a short distance beyond the last mentioned end 0f said socket; of means for removably securing Vthe handle to the tool head comprising an elongated plate applied to the flat end of the extended rportion of the tapered end of said handle in spaced relation to the tool head, the ends of said plate projecting beyond the periphery of said end of the handle and provided with apertures, a ring member applied to the handle and abutting the opposite .end of the socket on the tool head, said ring member being provided with diametrically opposed earshaving apertures therein adapted for registration with the apertures in said plate, tie bolts extending through the registering openings of said plate and ring having the heads thereof in kabutment With the outer face of said plate and the threaded ends extended beyond the apertures in said ring, and nuts engaged With the threaded ends of said bolts and adapted to contact with the one face of said ears on the ring to secure the elements together, as and for the purposes described.

2.Means .for securing the enlarged tapered end of a handle to an implement having a tapered socket formed thereon, the same consisting of an elongated plate bearing against the outer flat end or" the tapered portion of the handle and disposed inl spaced -relation to the socket and implement, the

ends of thev plate projecting beyond the periphery ofV said handle. and having apertures therein, a ring member applied to said handle and adapted to abut the peripheral edge of the opposite end of said socket, said ring member being provided with diametrically opposed apertures registering with the last mentioned apertures of said plate, and tie bolts engaged through the registering apertures of said plate and ringmember, as and for the purposes described.
