T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known. that I, BENJAMIN BROWN- STEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellwood City, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Flows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in hand plows and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with snow or other loose material, and is an improvement on the device as embodied in my prior Patent No. 1,202,792, dated October 31, 1916.

It is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby the head or plate is effectively braced in order to compensate for the stress or strain imposed thereupon together with means whereby the forward and rear portions of the plow are formed into scoops to hold the material that is gathered thereby.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hand plow whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a hand plow constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the handle being shown in fragment;

Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the device as disclosed in Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device as herein embodied; and

Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of my improved plow as herein disclosed.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes the head of my improved plow which is preferably formed of sheet metal and is bent longitudinally at one end portion to afford a short are 1 extending rearwardly and its opposite end portion is bent longitudinally to afford a long are $1 disposed forwardly. 7 and 8 denote braces interposed between the outer extremity of the angular portion 5 and the corner portions of the head H, said braces 7 being of a length less than the length of the braces 8 and each pair of

7 and 8 are diametrically opposed, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings. The

7 and 8 coacting with the curved portion 2 of the head are secured to said curved or are portion at the central portion thereof, while the remaining two

braces

7 and 8 are secured to the curved or are portion 1 at substantially the center thereof. The braces 7 and S prcferably comprise flat strips of metal.

The side margins or edges of the head H are provided with the oppositely directed flanges preferably afforded through the medium of the plates 9 and which plates serve as an effective reinforce for the head and especially as relates to torsionalstrain. The flanges as afforded by the plates also materially facilitate the practical use of the plow. It is also preferred that the forwardly directed flanges afforded by the plates 9 terminate in the connecting plane between the outer free edge of the'arc or curved portion 2 and the outer bow portion of the are or short curved portion 1, while the opposite or rearwardly directed flanges aflorded by said plate occupy the plane ex tending from the free or outer end of the short are or curved portion 1 and the inner portion of the long are or curved portion 2.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a hand plow constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively ience and facility with which it may be assembled.

It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the details of its illustrated embodiment, but may be embodied in other constructions of hand plows within the scope of the following claims.

I claim:

1. A device of the cllaracter described comprising a head having its opposite end portions disposed longitudinally on reversely directed curves, a handle secured to the head intermediate the curved ends thereof, a longitudinal margin of the head being provided with forwardly and rearwardly directed flan gcs.

2. A device of the character described comprising a head having its opposite end portions disposed longitudinally on reversely directed curves, a handle secured to the head intermediate the curved ends thereof, each longitudinal margin of the head being pro vided with forwardly and rearwardly directed flanges.

3. A device of the character described conuprising a head having its opposite end portions disposed longitudinally on reversely directed curves, a handle secured to the head intermediate the curved ends thereof, and plates secured to the longitudinal margins of the head and extending beyond opposite faces of the head to afford flanges.

i. A device of the character described comprising a head having its opposite end portions disposed longitudinally on reversely directed curves, a handle secured to the head intermediate the curved ends thereof, the longitudinal margins of the head being provided with. forwardly and rearwardly directed flanges, the forwardly directed flanges bridging the space between the intermediate portion of the head and the forwardly directed end portion thereof.

5. A device of the character described comprising a head having its opposite end portions disposed longitudinally on 'reversely directed curves, a handle secured to the head intermediate the curved ends. thereof, the longitudinal margins of the headbeing provided with forwardly and rearwardly di rected flanges, the rearwardly disposed flanges bridging the space between the inter-' nally on reversely directed curves, a handle;

secured to the head at substantially the transverse center of the head and adjacent the junction between the intermediate portion of said head and one of the curved end portions, and braces interposed betweenthe corners of the head and the handle at a point inwardly of the head.v I In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
