UNITED y sTATEs DONATO DI CARLO, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DOOR FASTNING AND OPENING MEANS.
Application filed August 14, 1922. Serial No. 581,579.
To all whom. t may conce/mi.'
Be it known that I, DoNAro DI CARLO, a subject of the King of Italy (having declared his intention of becoming a citizen ot the United States), residing atPhiladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Fastening and Opening Means, of which the .following is a specification.
This invention relates to phonograph cabinets and more particularly to door fastening and opening means therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide means for fastening the doors of the recordholding compartment closed, and means in the upper compartment for releasing the fastening means and causing the doors to open, thereby vpreventing opening the record compartment without first opening the lid.
These objects, and other advantageous endswhich will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in whicl Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a cabinet equipped with the improved door fastening and opening means,
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the structure shown in Figure 1, partly broken away and with the doors closed,
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the doo-rs open,
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2,
Figure 5 is a vertical section taken on the .line 5--5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is an enlarged elevation of a spring bolt forming a part of the fastening means.
In the drawings, 1 designates an enclosure, such as a phonograph cabinet, having doors 2 hinged at 3 to swing in opposite directions. These doors control access to the interior of the enclosure, in the present instance, the record-holding compartment of the phonograph cabinet.
Directly above doors 2 and inside the front wall of the enclosure is a fixed support or wall 4 and spaced above the fixed support 4 is another fixed support or motor board 5 forming a chamber between said support. A casing 6 is mounted'in the front Wall of as the enclosure over the top edges of the doors and this casing houses means for holding the doors closed. This' fastening means includes a` pair of spring-pressed latch bolts 7 which operatel through the casing and engage keepers in the top edges of doors 2.` Bolts 7 are projected by springs 8 and take through openings in a a plate 9 to which a slidable central `bar 10 is iixed. The bolts and bar slide in a guide 11 which is mounted in casing 6 and bar 10 is provided with a pin 12 slidable vertically in a slot in the casing.
A lever 13 is pivoted midway of its ends at the inside of the front'wall of the enclosure, as indicated at 14, and has a slotted arm, the slot taking over pin 12. The other arm is pivotally connected to an upright plunger 15 having a 'push button 16 and slidable in an opening 17 in fixed support 5. Plunger 15 passes through a guide bracket 18 fixed to the inside of the front wall. An expansible spring 19 surrounds the plunger between the bracket and the button 16 and coi-operate with springs 8, in holding the button above the top surface of fixed support 5 and the bolts 7 in the keepers of doors 2.
-Doors 2 are normally held closed by latch bolts 7 but are provided with means for opening them automatically when the latch bolts are released.
These means consist of plungers 20 having Shanks 22 slidable in brackets 21 and having their heads normally held in contact with the inner faces of the doors by springs 23. l
In use of the device, assuming that the doors are closed and it is desired to obtain access to the record compartment of a phonograph cabinet, the lid of the cabinet is rst opened. Button 16 is then depressed against spring 19 to swing lever 13 on its pivot 14. The outer end oi lever 13 will move downwardly and the inner end of the lever will move upwardly to raise and release bolts 7 from the keepers of doors 2 against the action of springs 8. The latches being released, the doors will be immediatelyl opened by the spring-pressed plungers 20.
The advantage of the device in connection with phonograph cabinets is that separate locking means for the doors, is rendered unnecessary but access to the compartment cannot be had without first opening the lid. Since each of the latch bolts 7' may act independently of the other, either door may be Closed and engaged by .the latch While the other is open;
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it Will be understood that the fvarious parts of my invention may be changed Without departing from the spirit thereof, and henoe I do not limit myself to the precise `construetion set forth, but consider that I am at liberty t0 make Snell .Changes and alteret-ions as fairly come Within the scope ,of the appended elaim.
Having thus deseribed my invention, what I `Claim as new and desire to seoure by Letters Patent -S-r# A @eine .including ew@ @merengue and :a ehayrnber between the compartments; doors olosing one compartment; alidlosin the other compartment; a casing Inount'e'l in the Chamber above the doors; a guide plate fixed in .the easing.; ,bolts sldable in he guide plate, provided with latches nor- -lever pivotally connected with the bar, and
a plunger in the lid closed Compartment adapted to aetnate the lever and Withdraw the latch bolts.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the4 presence 35 of two .subscribing Witnesses.
