Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. CLARKE, OF LEONARDSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PARCEL-HOLDERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 152.6011, dated June 30, 1874; 'application filed May 21, 1874.
To all 'whom fit may concern:
Bc it known that I, GEORGE B. CLARKE, ot' Leonardsville, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented certain new an d useful Improvements in Parcel, String, and Label Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consistsin the construction and arrangement of a combined parcel and label holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. i
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will no w proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring tok the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view; Fig. 2, a section through line m x.
A represents a flat metal bar, of any snitable length, one end of which is pointed, as shown, and the other end provided with a iat head, B. In the bar A are two or more slots, a, and in the head B are slots b b. The edge ofthe head B on each side of the bar is notched or toothed, as shown at d d.
This device may be stamped out at one operation by suitable dies from tin, sheet-iron, sheet-brass, or any other suitable sheet metal.
Upon the bar A is placed a latch-bar or latchplate, C, which is held against the toothed edges d of the head by means of a spring-bar,
D, said spring-bar being held on the bar A by means of pins or rivets d d'.
The device thus constructed may be used for an almost endless variety of purposes, which it is impossible to enumerate in this specification. It may be used for tying up parcels or bundles by thrusting the bar A through the same, attaching' one end of the string or strap h to the bar A, wrappin g said string or strap around the bundle, and then slipping the end in between the toothed edge d of the head B and the latch-plate O, when it is held there by the pressure of the spring-plate D. The label or tag can then be easily attached by its string in either of the slots bin the head. It may be used by market-men, express companies, railroads, travelers, and others for various purposes.
A chain, i, may be connected thereto for fastening, and a padlock maybe used in connection therewith, if so desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slotted plate A, having the flat head B and the toothed edge d, in combination with the catch-plate C and spring-plate D, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
GEORGE B. CLARKE. Vitnesses:
ALBERT M. GRIFFIN, JAMES M. BAssETT.
