ACETYLENE LAMP.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. Fnosr and ERNEST O. ZACHARIAS, citizens of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Acetylene Lamp, of which the following is a specification.
The. invention relates to improvements in acetylene lamps of the type commonly used by miners, said lamps comprising abox containing water, applied on the carbid in due time and quantity to generate acetylene gas regularly as needed; a' burner tube receiving gas from the carbid box, a burner tip at the outer end of the burner tube; a reflector detachably connected with the reservoir, an igniter mounted in the reflector in operativerelation to the burner tip, and a hook fixed on the reservior and used to connect the lamp with theminers cap.
The objects of the present invention are; to provide improved means for detachably connecting the reflector with the burner tube and the reservior, to prevent rotation of the reflector on the burner tube and thereby maintain proper position of the igniter relative to the burner tip; to provide a resilient ring detachably connected with the reservoir and carrying arms co-acting with the hook on the reservoir to prevent swinging of the lamp on the miners cap; to provide a collar of improved construction between the reflector and the reservoir. contributing to the general symmetry of the lamp; and toprovide improved means preventing leakage of gas around the detachable resilient ring carrying the braces or arms.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout all the views.
The main structure of the lamp comprises a carbid box 12 having a screw-threaded neck 17 a water-reservoir 13 having a circular flared rim-member 14 a circumfential bead 15; and a screw-threaded member 16 engaging on the neck 17 to unite the carbid box and the reservoir.
The reservoir has the usual water-tight floor or diaphragm, not shown. The burner tube 18 extends downwardly through the diaphragm, and conducts gas from the carbid box to the burner tip 19,
The igniter comprises a standard 20 firmly attached to the reflector and supporting the usual rota-tive sparking-wheel 21. In Fig. 2 the igniter is shown in the preferred position relative to the burner; the present invention includes means whereby the assembling of the reflector and the collar on the reservoir will automatically result in proper positioning of the igniter relative to the burner tip, thereby expediting proper assembling of the parts and avoiding great annoyance and possible injury to the user, which might result from misplacement of the igniter.
The collar 24,, shown in detail in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 serves to prevent rotation of the reflector on the burner tube and to hold the reflector plumb, and also serves to determine the position of the igniter relative to the burner tip. The collar is a circular boxlike structure made from a sheet metal disk pressed to form a circular rim having a radial notch 26 to receive the protuberance 23 on the'back of the reflector; a central member 27, concave 011 itsinner face to conform to'the curvature of the back of the reflector and convex on its outer face, and having a hole 28 to receive theburner tube, a flat outer face 29 having an integral protuberance 30, which bears on the member 16 to give rigidity to the structure; andv an integral transverse member 31 convex on, its

the reflector 22 will be placed on the tube with the back of theieflectorincontact with the concave face 27 of the collar and the'protuberance 30 in contact with the member 16 of the reservoir, and when the parts are thus assembled the protuberance 23 on the back of the reflector willbei in the' notclr26 in the collar; the nut 32 will be'scr'ew'edon the pipe 18 to secure the assembled parts; and the burner tip 19 will be pressed into the end of the tube.
A hook 33 soldered on the reservoir 13' is "used to support the lamp on the miners' cap.
Braces soldered on the reservoir and extending outwardly therefrom and having terminals engaging 'in" holes in a plate on the cap havebeeniu'sed to prevent swing ing of the lamp which is annoying to the user. The lamps are 'subjectto severe service and the [arms or v braces are often broken'and detachedfrom the'lamp and in thatcase it is necessary to take the lamp to a shop for repair. To overcome thisfobjection we provide a resilient wire ring 34 having integral outwardly extending arms, or braces 35 having terminals 36 adapted to engage the plate commonly used on miners caps to prevent swinging of the lamp.

The' arms 35 extend outwardly through notches 38 in the rim 14. Upon pressing the arms towards each other the ring will be contracted sufliciently to permit the'ring' to be inserted in, or withdrawn from, the channel 37. "In an acetylene l'amp,'the combination of a reservoir "having a circumferential bead; a burner tube extending outwardly through the wall of the reservoir; a collar having a concavity to receive the bead on the reservoir, also having a radial notch; a concavo-convex reflector having on its convex face a protuberance engaging in the radial notch of the collar to prevent rotation of the reflector relative to the collar; and
a sparking wheel supported in the reflector and rotative' in a planeradial to the reflector and common to the notch in the collar and the protuberance on the convex face of the reflector; and a nut on the burner tube seeuring the reflector and the collar in fixed relationto each other and in 'fixed relation to the reservoir. 2. In an acetylene lamp, the combination of a reservoir; a burner tube extending outwardlythrough the wall of the reservoir; a burner tip in the burner tube; a reflector in operative relationto the burner tube; a sparking wheel rotative on a support in the reflector; a protuberance on the convex face of the reflector and in the plane of rotation of the sparking wheel; and a collar in fixed relation to the reservoir and having a notch to receive the protuberance on the reflector to determine the position of the igniter relative to the'burner tip.

In an acetylene lamp, the combination of a reservoir having a rim-member having a circular channel, and radial notches; a hook fixed on the reservoir; a removable resilient ring free in said circular channel in the rim; and arms integral with said ring and extending outwardly through the notches in said rim, in co-operative relation to the hook on the reservoir.

In an acetylene la-mp'the combination of a reservoir having a rim-member having a circular channel and radial notches; and resilient ring 'loose in the channel of said rim inember and having integral arms extending outwardly through the notches in the rim member and compressible to contract said resilient ring to permit insertion of said ring in and its withdrawal from said channel in the rim member.
