ATTORNEYS Patented Feb. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES EMILIO ANTHONY IACOPONELLI, OF NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI,
BREAST -WHEEL SANDER.
Application filed June 2 1, 1922. Serial No. 570,033.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILIO A. IACOPON- ELLI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Natchez, in the county of Adams and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Breast-VVheel Sander, of which the following is a description.
My invention relates to breast wheel sanders for shoe finishing machines and more particularly relates to a means for holding the emery paper or the like on the wheel.
The general object of my invention is to provide a holding means for the paper, whereby the life or period of use of the applied sanding sheet (emery cloth or paper) is very materially prolonged and the sheet maintained in a condition for effective work.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a breast wheel having the surface sheet held thereto by my improved means, the section being indicated by the line 1-1, Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a front view of the wheel with my invention applied thereto;
Figure 3 is a view of the sanding sheet with my attachment applied thereto;
Figure 4 is a section through the sheet fastening means as indicated by the line 4-4, Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a detail cross section on the line 55, Figure 3.
In the illustrated example the numeral 10 indicates a known form of conical breast wheel; 11, a sheet of shoe finishing material; 12, the threaded sleeve for engaging the sheet 11 at the smaller end of the wheel; and 23 indicates a set screw for fastening the sleeve for completing the securing of the sheet at said end. The features referred to are generally of those found in known forms of breast wheel sanders.
In accordance with my invention I provide for means to positively fasten the sheet 11 to the wheel. Said means consists of an elongated element 14, of bendable sheet material, wire or the like, one end of which is returned on itself in the form of a hook terminal 15. The element 14 is so applied to the sheet 11 adjacent to one edge thereof as to lie parallel or approximately so with said edge. The material of the sheet 11 is turned under the element 14 so that the latter is infolded by the sheet. At that end of the element let opposite the hook 15 the material is returned on itself at the opposite side surface from the hook 15 as at 17 and an indentation 18 is produced in the return portion 17 and in the folds of the sheet 11 and the body of the element 14:, the indenting serving to retain the element 14 against displacement in applying the sheet 11 to the wheel 10.
lVith the application of the sheet 11 to the wheel the hooked end 15 will lie adjacent the large end of the wheel and said element projects beyond the curved edge of the sheet 11 sufliciently for said element to be bent at right angles or substantially so to lie against the front of the wheel as clearly shown in Figure 2. For engaging the hook 15 in the bent form of the element 14 I provide a wire or equivalent flexible element 19 on the face of the wheel concentric with the axis of the wheel and held at intervals to the wheel by screws 20. The use of my fastening attachment for the finishing sheet has resulted in. greatly reducing the wear on the sheet 11 by reason of firmly holding the sheet in position on the wheel and thereby preventing deformation or crumpling of the sheet or mutilation of its front edge.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a finishing sheet for breast wheel sanders having a fastener element thereon along an edge thereof, and means on said fastener element at an end thereof adapted to engage over an end of the breast wheel to hold the sheet to the wheel.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a fin ishing sheet for breast wheel sanders having a hooked fastener element thereon and projecting beyond the side edge of the sheet; together with securing means for said fastener element, and means to affix said securing means to an end face of the breast wheel.
3. Asia new article. of manufacture, a fin-n ishlng sheet for breast Wheel sanders, said:
sheet having a fastener element disposed along an end edge of said sheet and infolded in the material of the sheet, together with means on said element and projecting beyond a side edge of said sheet to secure said fastener element to the Wheel at an end face thereof.
4;. The combination with a breast wheel,
a n sh ng h pp i d the pfi z p of the Wheel, a. fastener element incorporated in said finishing sheet along an edge thereof and projecting beyond the side edge of the sheet and bendable to engage over an end of the breast Wheel, and an element fixed to said end of the Wheel and engageable by said projecting end of the fastener element.
