THREAD-CUTTING ATTAGHISEENT FOR FINGER RINGS.

Be it known that I, ULRIG C. Burns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Takoma Park, Washington, District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cutting Attachments for Finger Rings, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my present invention is the provision of a simple, inexpensive and eificient thread cutting device susceptible of ready application to an ordinary finger ring and adapted in use to be maintained in position by the occupation of the ring by the finger of the wearer.

To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

The finger ring 1 is not of my invention, and it is within the purview of my invenition to employ any type of finger ring to which the attachment constituting the in vention is applicable.

As best shown in Figure 3 the attachment is formed of a single strip of resilient metal or alloy such as sheet metal or steel. The said strip is preferably quite thin, and is shaped to provide the attachment with a U-shaped body 2, and a free arm 3, the said arm having in one of its edges a. notch 4: one wall 5 of which is made to constitute a cutting edge. The inner end of the arm 3 is joined through the medium of a bight 6 with the adjacent end of the back wall of the body 2, and the said bight 6 is disposed opposite to the mouth of the body 2 so that the arm 3 is arranged opposite the free arm or tongue 7 of the body 2.

I would further have it understood that in practice the free end of the attachment arm 3 is directed away from the palm of the hand, and when it is necessary to cut a thread, indicated by 8 in Figure 4:, it is simply necessary to arrange the thread as shown in Figure 4: relatively to the arm 3 of the attachment, and subject to the thread to tension when it will be quickly severed.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that my novel attachment is extremely simple, inexpensive and compact, and it constitutes a very convenient adjunct to a finger ring for the cutting of thread or the like. It will also be apparent that the attachment is strong and durable and is therefore not liable to be impaired after a short period of use.

The attachment being applied by preference to the inner portion of a finger ring is to a large extent hidden from view when the ring is in use, and therefore the attachment does not detract in any appreciable measure from the finished appearance of the ring.

I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications maybe made such as fall Within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.

Having described my invention What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is

1. As a new article of manufacture, a thread cutting attachment for finger rings, formed of a single strip of appropriate resilient material and comprising a U-shaped body having a tongue or free arm adapted to bear against the inner side of a finger ring, a free arm arranged opposite and extending reversely to the free arm or tongue of the body and having thread cutting means, a bight joining the free arm and the other arm of the body and extending across the mouth of the body and said other arm being adapted to be pressed by the finger of the wearer of the ring to retain said device in operative position.

2. The combination of a finger ring, and a thread cutting attachment comprising a resilient body and a free arm provided with a tapered cutting notch the said free arm being joined through a loop With one end of the body and being spaced from the body,
