Description

Patented Jen. 27, 1925.
UNITED STATES CARL F. OASWELL, OF COON RAPIDS, IOWA.
WALL-PAPER TRIMMER.
Application filed May 12,
To ti/'Z whom t may concer/1r:
Be it known that I, CARL F. CAswELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coon lltapids, in the county of Carroll and State of iowa, have invented a new and useful VVall-Paper Trimmer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for rewinding paper or the like and severing an edge thereof in the reach between a roll from which the stock is unwound and a roll taken in the trimmed stock.
An object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, light, compact, and relatively inexpensive device of the present nature embodying a driving motor associated with the driven trimmer parts in a manner whereby said motor is protected against being fouled in the trimming operation, and whereby the view of the stock at the point of severance is unobstructed and the stock working parts of the device conveniently accessible to the operator.
lilVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear in the following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the drawings, Fig. 1 is a front view of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken as on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view illustrating one end of the device, a portion of the driving motor being broken away and Fig. d is an end elevation of the device.
Referring to the drawing, it will be observed that my improvement comprises a portable, self-contained structure, the frame of which includes a base 10, brackets 11, 12 rising from the ends thereof and a combined tie and stock guiding plate 18 joining the brackets 11, 12.
Reels A, B are respectively arranged at the back and front of the device, the former constituting a rod 141 with an abutment 16L thereon, said rod being removably held at its ends in a side-register support VZ) carried by the brackets 11, 12. The reel B includes a rod 15 journaled at one end in an open bearing in the bracket 12 and a stub-shaft 16 journaled in a bearing 17 in the bracket 11. Said rod 15 is universally connected with the stub-shaft 16 through a joint 18 1924. serial No. 712,572.
and is fitted with a detachable stock securing clip 19. The reach of paper between the rolled portions thereof on the reels A, B is inclined but slightly out of the horizontal and rests, near the reel A, on the guide plate 13. vertically related, co-operating cutter wheels 20, 21 are respectively mounted on a shaft 22 journaled in a bearing 23 on the bracketll and a stud 24 reaching inward from said bracket. The cutter wheel 2O is fixed to the shaft 22, the cutter wheel 21 yieldingly engaging the cutter wheel 2() through the action of a spring 25, turns fre -ely on the stud 24;. The active portions of these cutter wheels 20, 21 meet at a position between the two reels A and B and operate to sever an edge from paper wound onto the reel B from the reel A.
A driving wheel 26, journaled on the bracket 1l, is toothed on its inner side to form a gear 27 within the periphery of said wheel. Said gear 27 meshes with two smaller gears 28, 29, the former being fixed to the shaft 22 for the cutter wheel 20 and the latter to the stub-shaft 16 journaled in the bracket 11. An elevated branch 11a of the bracket 11 carries a motor C having on the shaft 30 thereof a small friction wheel 31. rlhis friction wheel 31 engages the periphery of the driving wheel 26 at the top thereof and causes said driving wheel to turn upon the operation of the motor C. Said wheel 26, in turning, rotates the cutter wheel 20 and winding reel B through the gears 27, 28 and 29. Mounted at a substantial elevation above the cutter wheels 20, 21, the motor C permits of clear vision of the cutting action of said wheels 20, 21 and allows unhampered access to the trimmer parts. In said position, said motor is free from gilt, lint and other foreign inatter dislodged from the stock in the trimming operation.
To prevent the severed waste from curling up and fouling the trimmer parts and the motor, l provide a deflector tongue D, the shank 32 of said tongue being mounted on the tie plate 13, the forward end or tip 33 of said tongue reaching forwardly of the cutter wheels 20, 21 and downwardly therefrom.
Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Havingdescribed my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. In a device of the class described, a frame, a pair of horizontally spaced reels thereon, co-operating cutter wheels between said reels, a drive wheel journaled on said raine and geared to one oli' said reels and toy oneA ot said cutter wheels within the peripherythereoix, a motor mounted on the 'frame above the cutter wheels, a friction wheel on theshaft of the motor engaging the periphery of the driving wheel and a detiector associated with said cutter wheels and adapted to direct severed trimmings downward and away from said motor.
2. In a device or' the class described, a frame, a reel 'for rolled stock, a winding reelspaced horizontally ot' said first reel, cutting mechanism between the reels, a motor vsupported on the frame in protectingkkelevation above the cutting mechanism permitting of free access thereto and unobstructed visibility thcreo, said motor being geared to said mechanism and to one or said reels, and a detlector for directing trimmings 'trom said mechanism downwardly between said reels and away from said motor.
3. In a device of the class described, a fra-me, a pair ot' horizontally spaced reels thereon, co-operating cutter wheels between said reels, a combined friction wheel and gear journaled on said frame, a motor mounted on the frame above the cutter wheels, a friction wheel on the shaft of the motor, said combined friction wheel and gear being frictionally engaged with said friction wheel and geared to one of said reels and to one of said cutter wheels, and a detiector adjacent said cutter wheels for directing severed trimmings downward and away from said motor.
ln testimony whereof, l have signed my name tov this specilication.
