Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM PURDY, OF BURLINGTON, IOVA.
IMPRVEMENT IN STOCK-CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,409, dated June 23, 1874; application filed June 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM IURDY, of Bur- 1ington,in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock Gars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specitication.
My invention relates to an attachment to a car, which I term'a cattle-bar,7 so constructed and adjusted that it may be temporarily raised and secured to the top of the car above the door, and after the car is filled be dropped into its place, and also capable of being swung back out of the way when the car is not in use as a cattle-car.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view of the inside ot' the car, showing the cattle-bar in position across the doorway, together with a view showing how its loose end is fastened to the door-post. Fig. 2 shows the cattle-bar raised, and secured temporarily above the door, together with sectional view showing this fastening. Fig. 3 shows the cattlebar swung back out of the way and secured, together with sectional view of the fastening device. Fig. 4 is a view of the swivel attachment My invention consists in the device hereinafter described, viz:
The cattle-bar A of proper length is provided at one end with an eye-strap, B, of metal, through which the ring of the swivel C is passed. This swivel C is fitted into a slot, c, in which it is free to move up and down. During the loading of the ear with stock the bar A may be raised up bodily, turned ilatly against the roof, and slid back into a retaining-hook, l). NVhen the ear is loaded the bar A may be loosened from above, and let fall into the position shown in Fig. l, the lug or latch E hooking over the ear E', attached to the docnpost, and the bar securely fastened in position by means of the drop-latches or buttons ce', which press against the top of the bar.
`When the car is not being used as a stockcar, the cattle-bar A may be swung back around the swivel C, and secured against the side of the car by hooking over the hook F, as shown in Fig. 3. The same car may be provided, upon the opposite side of the doorway, with the swiveled grain-door for which I applied for Letters Patent February 24,1873, and shown in the drawings at X.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. The cattle-bar A, provided with sliding swivel C and latch E, substantially as shown, and for the purposes described.
.2. The combination, in a cattle-car, of the bar A, with sliding swivel C and latch E, hook D, and hook F, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of May, 1873.
IIIRAM PURDY.
Titnesses ADoLPHUs DELAHAYE, EUGENE SCHILLING.
