Be it known thatI, WILLIAM B. Kle n, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny have invented a and State of Pennsylvania, new and useful I nprovement in' Awning- Pulleys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof My invention pertains to .pulleys, and: relates especially to pulleys for use 'in'connec- Pulleys of the ordinary construction, when used in connection with awnings or other devices where fabric is liable to come into contact with the pulley, are open to the objection that the fabric of, the awning or be drawn into the throat of the pulley, either above or below the pulley-wheel, and thereby to become damaged. usually of oval shape,provided with aflange 16, which extends around the front edge. thereof. The flange tubular extension 17 disposed so as to extend tangentially to the periphery of a pulley wheel 18' one'end of the spindle of which is mounted to rotate in the back plate 15.

The flange 16 is formed, at the top of the back-plate, with a recess 19 for receiving the shank 20;of a swivel 21. -Cooperating with the back-plate 15 which is formed with the spindle of the. adapted to be secured to the back-plate by means of rivets, 22, the. front plate being a hole for receiving 16 is formed with ais a front-plate 21 pulley-wheel 18, and is spaced from the back-plate by abutting against the flange 16. The front plate is formed with an ear 23 which enters the recess 19 and confines the swivel 21 in its proper position. When the parts of the pulley are assembled, the rear thereof is open and the front thereof, above and below the tubular extension 17, is closed by the flange 16.

It will be seen that the construction of pulley described above eiiectually prevents any of the awning-fabric from being drawn into the throat of the pulley, either above or below the pulley wheel. The tubular extension 17 will usually prevent the fabric from being brought up close to the pulley; and, should the fabric come into contact with the pulley, the portions of the flange 16 above and below the tubular extension prevent the fabric from entering the throat of the pulley at either part. While obtaining the above advantage, the pulley is of simple construction and may be manufactured at an exceedingly low cost.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. An awning-pulley comprising a back plate having a laterally extending flange around the front half only of the periphery thereof, said flange having a recess adjacent the top thereof and being formed interber consisting of a flat plate having mediate its ends with an elongated tubular extension, a front plate secured to said back plate and abutting against said flange, said front plate having a portion extending into said recess, a swivel mounted in said recess, and a pulley-wheel mounted to rotate between said front and back plates.

2. An awning pulley comprising a unitary metallic back-member including, a plate-portion having a flange-portion extending partially therearound and terminating at points adjacent the top and bot tom, and having an elongated tube extending angularly outward from said flange-portion intermediate the ends of the latter, said flange-portion having a transverse slot formed therein near the top, a frontmema lug plate backadapted toenter said slot when said is superposed on the flange of said member, means for securing said frontmember to sald back-member, a pulley rotatably mounted between said member-s, and a supporting swivel disposed in said slot and retained in position by said flange and said lug, for the purposes set forth.
