UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. HAvEN, or CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,370, dated June 23, 1874 application filed October 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. HAVEN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bedsteads, of which the following is a specitication:
My intention is designed for the tenon or male part of a metallic fastening for bedsteads and other sepa able furniture; and relates wholly to the means for securing the same in the rail or other member from which it is to project.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the parts Fig. 2 is a section at the line 00 m. Fig. 3 shows my fastening in position in the rail end. Fig. 4 is a section at the line 3 y. Fi 5 is a vertical section, showing a modification of my improvement.
A may represent a portion of a bedstead- B may represent a tenon head of any customary or approved form. Customary neck or necks G O unite rearwardly in a wing or shank, D, to occupy a corresponding mortise-kerf or excavation, E, in the rail or other member from which it is to project. A notch, (I, or hole (1, entirely across said shank, receives a glued wooden plug, F or F, whose thickness corresponds to the width of the eX- cavation. This plug serves both to secure the fastening and to reunite the walls of the excavation. The shank, when of the form shown in Fig. 1, maybe plugged after insertion; but
when of the other form shown must be plugged before insertion.
Although preferably segmental, as represented, and made to fit each other, nevertheless the shank D or the mortise E mayhave any other form or contour in the vertical plane of the shank. The shank and plug in either case are driven endwise into the mortise which is cut in the solid end of the rail, and in the illustrations the mortise is adapted to be formed at a single simple operation by arevolving cutter.
The segmental shape of the shank in its preferred form, and the perforation or recess therein, broadly considered, are known to be old, and are hereby disclaimed. These features of my present invention are shown, for instance, in J. Rodefers extended patent, dated April 10, 1855, and reissued to James L. Haven 85 00., June 20, 1871, No. 4,432.
I claim as new and of my invention-- The combination of the rail A, having the mortise E formed therein, the recessed tenonshank D, and the glued wooden plug F, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JAMES L. HAVEN.
