TOY BALLOON.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, JAMEs F. MULHoL- LAND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Balloons, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to toy-balloons, and more particularly to toy balloons of that nature described and claimed in my Patent 1,478,755 and which are designed to be sold in knocked-clown deflated condition for erection and inflation by the 1 purchaser.

Among the various objects of my present improvements I aim to provide a toy of this nature of more neat appearance than that proposed in my patent as well as one which may be more cheaply made and more easily and quickly erected by the purchaser.

According to my present improvements in a general way I propose the utilization of two cylindrical inflated bags from which is suspended a car or basket, the form of which and the form and application of the suspension connections of which are such as to promote ready and easy erection and assembly without necessitating especial skill and with but little instruction.

In the accompanying drawing which illustrates my present invention and forms a part of this specification,

Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the complete toy balloon in finished form,

Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section taken therethrough substantially on line 22 of Figure 1,

Figure 3 is a top plan view of the car or basket, and

Figure 4 is a plan View of the blank from which the car or basket is erected.

Referring now to these figures and particularly to Figures 1 and 2 my present invention proposesthe use of a pair of inflated bags 10 and 11 which in their inflated condition are cylindrical, bag 10 being of somewhat larger dimensions than bag 11 and being utilized in practice above the bag 11 as clearly shown in these figures.

A car or basket indicated at 12 in these figures is suspended below the superposed bags 10 and 11 and attached thereto by suspension cords 13 in such manner that the assembly of these parts becomes a simple easy matter and danger of their relative" displacement in use is avoided.

According to my invention the car or basket 12 is formed from a rectangular blank 14 shown in Figure 4 having its end 7 portions slitted as at 15 at spaced points, for

portions only of its length and having along its sides and ends perforations 16 at a plurality of spaced points. The slits 15 divide the ends of the blank into central and side flaps 17 and 18 and in directing the car or basket the sides of the blank are bent upwardly at right angles to the central portion or base alon dotted lines 19 connecting the slits 15 thus forming the sides 20 of the car or basket as seen particularly in Figures 2 and 3. The central end flaps 1'7 are turned upwardly at right angles as particularly seen in Figure 3 and the side flaps 18 at the ends are bent to outstand in oonvergent contacting relation so that the apertures 16 at their upper and lower portions coincide for the reception of certain of the suspension cords 13 in the upper apertures and certain cords 21 and 22 in the lower apertures, the former of which cords may be provided with a ring 23 so that the balloon as a whole may be drawn from place to place, and the latter of which cords may be utilized for holding an anchor 24 as well as a flag holding cord 25 to support a flag 26, one end of the flag holding cord being attached for instance to the drawn and secured end of the bag 10 as in Figure 1.

After erecting the car or basket as described and extending certain of the suspension cords 13 through the upper coinciding apertures of the outstanding end flaps 18, these suspension cords are tied across the top of the car or basket as at 27 in Figure 1 and the basket will thus be held in its erected form. The other suspension cords are then passed through the alined apertures 16 of the side walls 20 of the car or basket and similarly tied across the top of the basket and these several cords are then after infia tion of the smaller bag 11 extended around this bag and again tied as at 28 after which the bag 10 is inflated and the cords ex tended around this bag also and tied at 29 at the top thereof. The end cords may be left with upper extensions 30 and these extensions may be tied to one another longitudinally along the upper portion of the upper larger bag 10 in order to defeat any tendency of the end cords from spreading alongthe end portions of the balloons, although it is obvious that in the connection 01": the cords around the balloons, they may be tied with sufficient tension upon the inflated bags to defeat shifting movement of the cords thereafter. These extensions 30. when tied also serve to permit the device to be carried from place to place and to be hung up or suspended from a suitable support when the balloons. are filledwith air or a non-supporting gas.

I claim: A toy balloon including a pair of superposed cylindrical inflated bags, a car or basket extending below the bags having upstanding apertured side walls and outstandi11g ap ertu red end flaps, suspension cords extending through the apertures of the side walls and end flapscand-tiedlacross the top of the car orbasket, to-supportthe latter in; its: finished form, saidqsuspension cords extending upwardly around the cylindrical bags andlbeing tiedbetween the bags-and atthe top of the upper bag in order to: se curely hold the bags; against displacement and support the car 01% basket below the bags.
