UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX SPILLMAN, F RICHFIELD, NEW Il'llltSlEYv ASSIGNOR T0 WORTHINGTON PUMP AND MACHINERY CORPORATION, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF VIR- GINIA.
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
T o "ZZ whom. it mr/ z/ concern.'
Be it known that I` MAX SrlnLuAN. a citizen of Switzerland. residing at Richfield,.county ot' Passaic, and State of New 6 Jersey'. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Pumps, fullv described and represented in the lollowing specification and the accompanying drawings. formingr a part of the saine.Y
This invention relatesl to improvements 1n centrifugal pumps. l The chief object ot' the, invention is to provide a cheap. compact and highly efii cient multistage centrifugal pump ot light weight and little subieet to wear. The pump is especially1 adapted for use as a mine pump. in which low weight is an important factor, especially when the pump is. made of bronze, and in which the reduction ot wearingr effect from the liquid. due to the shape of the passages and strong,r design of the parts subject to wear. is \ital l'iecause of the wearing action of mine water For a full understandinpr of tlio i1iven tion, a full description ot a construction embodvingr all the teatuges ot the saine, in their .ireferred form will now be given in connectlol with the accompanying drawings` torming a part of this specitication` and the 'fein tures formingy the invention then specifically pointed out; in the claims.
In the drawings- Figi l is a longitudinal section of a pump of the preferred form;
Figs. 2 and 3 are. respectively7 sections on the lines 2 2, 3-3 of Fig. l.
Referring now to the drawings; the pump comprises a shaft l() upon which are mount* ed suitable impellers ll` tour impellers of the closed type heimv shown in the present instance. separated by suitable partition members 12 and enclosed by a pump casing .f\. preferably made in two parts consistingT of a lower section '13 and an upper section 14. tlu` lower .section l preferably carrying; the inlet and outlet connections l?. 18. The, pump shaft i() is provided at opposite cnds with suitable bearings l5 andthe usual stufting boxes 16. lach impeller ll. except the last. discharges through a plurality of. passages between the dividing fins l and the outer easing. three such passages u., L, c
referably being "provided, s`nown. hese discharge passages gradually expand Serial No. 530,074.
radially from the impeller so as to convert the velocity ot the pumped liquid into preslsure. and deliver at right angles through the outlets a'. L. c. to corresponding chambers H2. 712. c?. from which the liquid passes inwardly through an annular passage 'l'ornied in the partition l2 and shown as divided by the usual vanes 2. to the eye of the next iinpeller. this construction being?r re peated through the successive impellers to the last impeller ll. The openings o. b. c through which the liquid passes sideways. and the chambers4 u2` fr. c?. are pret'- erably formed as shown, so as to diminish in radial dimensions from the passages a, b. c on a suitable curve. the form of casing re sultiinr therefrom eliminatin'pr stresses which would result from an abrupt change ol` flow in the chambers and improving the appearance of the pump. The impeller of the last stage` the fourth in the construction shown, may7 deliver to any suitable form of discharge. but preferably delivers to the well-known single volute discharge chamber the latter developingy into the discharge connection l5.
The casing' A is not circular or volute in lorm. except that it may be Circular or volute tor the last stage with its single volute. but is shaped to conform to the plurality of delivery passages surrounding,r the impellers. and in the preferred (threedelivery construction .showin is ot' .l torni generally that ot' an eouilateral triangle. with one side of the triangle forming' the horizontal hase of the puinp. and two of the deliveries 'for cach' impeller beinfr formed in this base xsection l?, of the casingy and one in the upper section ll at the top ot the casing. 'l`l1is forni is best adapted tor the .support ot the pump. and with the divided easingy produces a structure that. is very simple ol` manufacture and has great strength to resist the pump stresses without great weight ol material. l'afaltage iietw'een the stages is reduced. also. as compared with a pump ot equal capacity ha\ ing` a circular casing and especially with diti'usingg rings. the casing -ioints in tho present roustruction being' much nearer the center so that the strain on the joint and tendency to open up the joint on the inside are less. lVhile this threewdelivery and generally triangular form of pump easing is preferred, however.
and in itself forms an important part of the invention, it will be understood that the broader features of the invention ma be may be embodied in constructions aving a different number of delivery passages for the impellers and a casing of other than generally triangular form.
It will he understood that the invention is not limited to the special type or number of inipellers shown nor to the detailed construction of the casing or pump parts, but that modifications may be made therein While retaining the invention defined by the claims.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. A centrifugal pump having three delivery passages surroundinv the impeller and formed between dividing ilus and the pump casing. said delivery passages increasing in radial dimensions from the impeller to the discharge openings through which the liquid passes sidewise through the passage Wall, chambers at the side ol' the passages receiving the discharge and decreasing in radial dimensions from said discharge openings7 and an outside casing surroundingr the deliverv passages and chambers and having generally the form ot' an equilateral tri angle with one of said discharge openings at each angle.
