To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS W. AKI- Morr, asubject of the Czar of Russia, at present residing in Philadelphiaf of Philadelphiaand State 0 Pennsylvania,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rotary pumps and it has particular relation to pumps of the multi-stage turbine t pe which are primarily designed to pump iquids against a relatively high dlscharge pressure.
The principal ob ects of my invention are to provide in a pump 6f the character described a compact structure which may be readily assembled and dismantled when desired, and in which the ports through which the liquid passes are readily accessible during or after construction for the purpose of obtaining smooth and clean passages for the liquid, to theend that the efliciency of the pump will be increased by the diminution of the friction of the liquid passing through the ports resulting from the clean and smooth passages which may be obtained.
My invention also contemplates a structure wherein the shape of the ports is such that the impelled liquid is not subjected to such violent changes of direction as heretofore. lo the end that the efiiciency of the pump may be increascdin this manner.
The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a multi-stage turbine pump embodying the main features of my invent-ion; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of'the same taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of the parts of the stationary guides of the structure, said parts being shown separated slightly from each other in the ositions assumed during assembling and ismantling; 'Fig. 4 is an end elevation of certain of the parts shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 3, but of the rotary impeller, showing the parts thereof in detached relationship; Fig. 6 is an end elevation of a portion of t 1e rotary impeller shown in Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view of a portion of the rotary impeller showing the manin the county ner of securing the several parts thereof to each other.
Referring to the drawings, 8 is a cylindrical housing within which the main portions of the pump proper are contained.
9 is the impelling shaft-traversin the axis of the housing 8, and ada ted to e driven at a high rate of speed rom any suitable source of power not shown. Mounted on the impelling shaft 9 is a series of turbine impellers 10, each composed of two dished circular members 11 and 12,-one of which is provided with a series of vanes 13 forming the blades of said turbine .impellers 10 when the same are assembled. The separate dished members 11 and 12 are secured to each other to form the impeller 10 bymeans of rivets 14 or other suitable fastening means through the blades 13, as clearly shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings.
The dished shape of theseparate members 11 and 12 of the impellers 10 forms a backwardly inclined passageway for the liquid through said impellers between the members- 11 and 12 when the same are assembled in position in the structure, the blades 13 serving to maintain the members 11 and 12 the roper distance apart. Mounted within the rousing 8 so as to form a communication between the successive impellers 10 is a series of stationary 'uides 15 which are composed preferably 0t three members 16, 17 and 18, member 16 being circular in outline and- members 17 and 18 being each semi-circular in outline to constitute a complete circumferential structure when "assem-' led, these vanes serving, when the entire structure is assembled, to direct the passing liquid in the proper direction through the,

The stationary guides 15 are maintained against rotation by means of a suitable key 28, and the several members 16, 17 and 18 constituting the stationary guides 15 are as, severe members of the stationary guide 15,

maintained in proper relationshipby the vanes 19 acting as spacers. Members 17 and 18 are also maintained in their proper relationship by means of suitable dowels 29,
as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings.
The cylindrical housing 8 is closed at one end by means of a suitable head 22 having an inlet 23 cast integral therewith, from which inlet the ingoing liquid is delivered through a diffuser rin 24 of an preferred desi to the first of t e series 0 impellers 10. T e last of the series of impellers 10 delivers the outgoing liquid through a stationary guide ring 25,which is secuged in place within a volute discharge casing 26 which constitutes the closure at the other end of housing 8. The volute casing 26 is substantially identical with the volute casings usually emplo 'ed in this type of machinery, and there ore need not be further described. To compensate for any end thrust of the impelling shaft 9 due to the backward inclination of the impellers 10, a thrust bearing 27 may be employed which as shown is preferably arranged at the outlet end of the structure.
By the foregoing arangement there is provided a multi-stage turbine pump which is simple and compact, occupying a minimum of space, and in which thepassageways for the liquid are all accessible for smoothing and finishing in the construction of the same. Furthermore, sharp turns in the di rection of the passing liquid are eliminated, which result in a marked increase in the efficiency of the pump when the same is in operation.
Having thus described the nature and characteristic features of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a pump of the character described, a shaft, a plurality of impellers secured to said shaft, said im )ellers being inclined backwardly substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pump of the character described. a shaft, a series of impellers secured to said shaft, a plurality of stationary guides having passageways forming a communication between the successive impellers of the series thereof, said impellers being inclined backwardly with respect to said guides sub- 4. 6. In a pump of the character described, a shaft, a series of impellers secured to said shaft,a plurality of stationary guides having passageways forming a communication between the successive impellers of the series thereof, said stationary guides comprising a central circular member and two outside semi-circular members substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
