Be it known that l, OswALD UDA, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Houston, in thecounty of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful lmprovenientsin Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
rl`his invention relates to new and useful improvements in a centrifugal pump.
The object of the invention is to provide a. pump of the character described, irovided with a deflector. having' spiraled vanes, fixed relative to the inlet which are provided to impart a whirling motion to the inflowing fluid before it comes within the range of the ruimer.
As is well known the fluid is drawn into "thepump by suction, created by the spiraled vanes of the rotating runner, the reaction causing an end thrust on the runner shaft which is sustained by a thrust-bearing, with whichl pumps of the ordinary construction are equipped. T he rotation of 'the shaft, and the cnd thrust sustained thereby often cause this bearing to become very hot and to quickly burn out.; the shaft of the ordinary centrifugal pump is also subjected to considerable torsional strain in imparting a rotary motion to the fluid in the pump and it is the object of this invention to relieve said shaft of the end thrust and torsional strain bv delivering, to the runner, the fluid al' ready in rotary motion.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each ofthe figures, the numeral l refers to the pump shell or casing, which, in general contour, is circular, and has the removable end plate 2 having the central fluid inlet 3. Opposite the inlet is a defleetor formed of an inverted conical shaped disk a and-the spiraled vanes` spaced apart 5, said disk being fixed relative to the end plate by means of said vanes. The va-nes are spaced apart and are integral with said plate and disk. This deiector imparts rotary movement to the fluid entering through A the inlet 8.
.The-runner is formed of the disk 6, the ring 7 and the spiraled vanes 8, arranged between, and integral with, them. The runner rotates, in countersunk bearings in the end plate 2 and the opposite lpart of the pump easing, respectively thus fitting closely within the casing and'surrounding the deflector.
The runner-is fixed upon a shaft 9 which rotates in a suitable stuffing box 10, carried by Vthe casing. Rotation is imparted to the runner, in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. l, by this shaft, and the fluidis drawn into the pump through the inlet 3 and discharged through the outlet 11. stationary defiector imparts a spiraled or 'whirling movement to the fluid and delivers it to the runner vanes, in motion, thus relieving the. ruimer and runner shaft of the strain incident to overcoming the inertia of fluid infiowing in a direct current.

A device of the character described including av casing, a removable end plate having a fluid inlet, fixed to the casing, a deflectoropposite the inlet formed of an invcrted conical shaped disk, spiraled vanes 'integral with and located between the end`V plate and the deieetor, said vanes fixing the defiector relative tot-he end plate, and being spaced apartand provided to impart a rotary lmotion to fluid passing in the inlet, and a runner surrounding the deflector and including a. disk, a ring, spiraled vanes,
and arranged between and integral with the disk andi-ing, the end plate and the opposing ortion of the pump casing` being provide with counter-sunk bearings in which the runner rotates.
