Description

(No Model.) BEHR- GBNTRIFUGAL PUMP. No. 546.219. Patented Sept. 10, 1895.
PATENT HANS C. BEHR, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,219, dated September 10, 1895.
Application tiled December 3, 1894- Serial No. 530,788. (No model.) A
to be a full, clear, and exact description of thev same.
My invention relates to the class of centrifugal pumps with inlets at one side only; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully de scribed and specifically claimed, the object of which is to balance or relieve the pressure on the impeller or runner, tending to displace it axially or cause end friction against thecollars on the im peller-shaftl Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my inven tion, Figure I is asection of thepump through the center line of the impeller-shaft. is a section in a plane at right angles to the center line of i1npeller-shaft- Theimpeller of the pump is an incased one, the casing consisting of one side A, having a central inlet-opening, and curved outwardly at its center toward a cylindrical form to meet and join the inlet G of the pump. The other side A2 of the impeller-casing extends to the center, Where it is formed into or joins the hub P, secured to the impeller-shaft E, which is mounted in a suitable bearing in the exte' rior housing or shell A. The two sides A and A2 of the impeller are connected by suitable radial blades, such as the 'long ones B, here shown, and the short intervening ones C. IIoles O O near the hub I permit of the equalization of the pressure on the central part of the casing side A2. A conoidal shield Il, of a diameter approximately the same as the inlet-opening to the impeller in the side A', covers the inner central part of the side A2, with its openings O O, and comes into proximity with said side at the periphery of the shield, as shown at K2.
The function of the shield U ,may be described as follows: In ordinary single-inlet pumps it is a part of the impeller and revolves withit. In this case it is subject, on the side near the housing, to the entire pressure due to the centrifugal head existing at the periphery of the runner, Whichvpressure is Fig. 2.
obviously transmitted to the space between outside of runner and shell, as there is no packing at the periphery of runner. On the inner side of the runner the pressure is zero at the center and increases outwardlyin pro portion to the square of the radius, so that there exists an over pressure, with the ordi nary single-inlet runner pressing it in one direction, which pressure has to be taken up by collars against journals. These bearings are very liable to heat and grind. By having the holes O O the runner is relieved of this side pressure; but the center of the runner thus apertured and subject to pressure needs the bracing and support of the shield U.
The impeller sides A A2 come into proximu ity with the outer housing or shell only at the inlets and outlets on said impeller, as is shown at the points .I and K'.
The shield U is stationary and is secured upon a rod V, which supports it axially from the hub Z of the web or bridge Z2, formed With or secured in the inlet-piece G.
Instead ofthe construction just described, the elbow G2 may be directly attached to the pump-housing and the rod extended through its curved part, as shown in dotted lines by V2.
The shield U is maintained in a central position by the enlarged extension W' of the rod V, which said extension extends into the hub P of the impeller-casing side A2, said hub revolving on the extension, which, with its rod V and shield U, remains fixed and non-rotating. The gradual curvature of the surface of the shield Uleads the liquid with easy sweep into the impeller.
In order to lubricate the extension W, the oil-cup Y, communicating with channels X and X2, leading to l/V, is provided.
I is the discharge-duct of the pump, M the daring nozzle, and N the discharge-pipe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' In a centrifugal pump, the combination, of a casing having one side A with acentral inlet opening, and curved outwardly at its center to meet and join the inlet pipe of the pump, and having its opposite side A2 extended to the center Where it is formed with a hub, with holes in said side near the hub to equalize p casing sideA2,a conoidal shield of a diameter the hnb of the impeller whereby the shield is approximating the same as the inlet opening maintained in a central position, a flaring disin the side A', covering the central part of charge nozzle and a discharge pipe communithe side A2 and its holes, and with its peripheating therewith.
5 ery in proximity with said side, alternating In witness whereof I have hereunto set my 15 long and short radial Vanes connecting said hand.
sides, a stationary rod for supporting the HANS C. BEHR. shield axially, a web or bridge formed with lVitnesses: or secured in the inlet of the pump, said rod S. H. NOURSE,
1o having an enlarged extension which enters H. F. ASOHECK.
