WATER-MOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 1, 1909. Serial No. 487,143.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. lVHEnAN,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Buena Vista, in the county of Chatl'ee and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lVater-Hotors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in water motors, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a parthereof-Figure 1' is a central longitudinal section through the motor. Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 is a sectionon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a cylindrical casing 1, having at one end, which will hereafter be designated .the inlet end, provided with an internal annular ring 2, whose outer face is grooved as at 3 for a urpose to be presently described, the ring eing secured to the casing by screws 9. A plurality of rings 4 and a are secured to-the inner face of the other end of the casing, which will be hereafter desig nated as the outlet end, by means of screws 5, and the inner faces of the rings at their adjacent edges are annularly recessed as at 6 to form a race, in which is received an annular series of rollers 7. A ring 8, substantially U-shaped in cross section, is secured by one of its sides 10 to the inlet end of the casing by the screws 9 and the inner face of the curved or body portion of the ring is shaped tojjfit the outer face of the flange and the other or inner side 12 of the Ushaped ring-,is spaced a art from the inner faces of the ring2 as s iown in Fig. 1.
The motor comprises a substantially cylindrical .eawing 13, arranged within and con.- centric with the casing 1, and the outlet end of th'e'outer face of the casing 13 engages the mll'ers 7. while the inlet end is provided with an external annular flange 13 whose inner face is glrooved and cooperates with I the move of t g e ring 2 to form a ball race,

pair of blades or vanes 14, 15, are arranged within the casing 13, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each of said blades being arranged diagonally of the casing, and in opposite positions, the blades'formlng substantially a ri 'ht angle with each other, and withtheir ad jacent' edges slightly overlap ing, as shown at 16 in Fig. 2.- Each bla e is substantially straight on its free edge 17 and is provided at approximately the center thereof. and at the longitudinal center of the easing with a semi-circular recess 18, the recesses cooperating toform a free central opening. The attached edge 19, of each vane is an arc of an ellipse and is attached throughout its extent to the inner surface of the casing. A. bevel gear ring is secured in any suitable manner to the outer surface of the casing 13 near the outlet end of the easing, and meshes with a bevel gearwheel 21, on a shaft .22, journaled in a bearin r hub 23 in the side of the casing, and a bal bearing 24 is arranged between the hub and the shaft.
The casing 1 with therotor in place, is arranged in the current, or in the path of movement of the waves, with the inlet end up stream. The water flowing in the direction of the arrows shown in ,Fig. 1 strikes the blades, and since they are arranged at an angle to the lines of force exerted by the current, they are deflected to one side, thus imparting a rotation to the casin 1, which movement is transmitted by the s an 22, to the mechanism to be operated.
It will be observed that the inlet endof the casing 13 is arranged between the balls,
11 and the inner side of the U-shaped ring, and that the free edge of the ring 4 extends closely against the outlet end of the casin 13.
