To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OARMELO FARRUGGIO, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to canes, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a novelty cane having its body portion consisting of a multiple of opposed variegated disks of oxen horn, cemented together and mounted and secured upon a core corresponding to the contour of the cane, and whereby when the edges of the disks are polished, the body of the cane will appear similar to banded agate or petrified wood, under such conditions providing a highly ornamented cane body.

Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a cane which is strong, durable, pleasing in appearance, conveniently constructed, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically. described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

By way of example, the cane is illustrated as of the crooked type, but it is obvious that the cane can be of any des.red shape other than that as shown. The cane comprises a core, a body portion, a combined ferrule and lower securing element and a combined knob and upper securing element. The core of the cane is indicated at 1 and is formed from a metallic rod, bar or wire of substantial length'and rigidity. The bar 1 has the major portion of its length polygonal in contour, as indicated at 2, its upper terminal portion cylindrical, as indicated at 3, and its lower terminal portion reduced, of cylindrical contour and peripherally threaded, as at 4. The core 1 will correspond to the desired shape of the cane, but whether the shape of the cane be of the curved handle or straight type, the core 1 will be provided with the cylindrical upperterminal 3 and the reduced cylindrical peripherally threaded lower terminal 4.

The body portion of the cane, which is mounted on the core 2, is formed from a multiple of circular disks 5, each provided with an opening 6 corresponding in contour to the shape of the polygonal portion of the core 1, whereby when the disks are mounted on the core the "rotative movement thereof, with respect to the core, will be prevented. Each of the disks 5 gradually decreases in diameter from its upper to its lower face, and the diameter at the bottom of an upper disk is the same as the diameter of the top of a lower disk, and by this arrangement a tapered body portion is set up, or in other words, the body portion gradually decreases in diameter from its upper to its lower terminus.

The disks are secured together by a layer of cement or other suitable adhesive substance, as indicated at 7, and such layer 7 is flush with the periphery of the disks. As before stated, each of the disks is constructed of oxen horn and which is formed with light and dark portions 8, 9 respectively, which are irregular but give a banded effect simllar to banded agate or the stripes in petrified wood. Although the preferred contour of each of the disks is circular, yet it is obvious that each of the disks can be of polygonal contour with slightly bevelled edges to set up a tapered body portion when the disks are secured upon the core 1.

The core 1 is of greater length than the length of the body portion 10, and projects not only from the upper end but also from the lower end of the body portion 10. See

Figures 2 and 4. The upper terminal porportion 10 and extends into the socket 11 of a combined knob and securing element 12. The terminal portion 3 of the core is preferably secured within the knob 12 by a cementitious substance, or if the knob 12 constructed of metallic meteriahthe termi nal portion 3 can be welded to the knob 12-; To further secure the knob 12 to the terminal portion 3 of the-core 1, a stay pin 13 is employed which extends through an opening in the terminal'portion 3 and is secured in' the'knob 12, which is apertured forthe reception ofthe pin.

Connected to the lower terminal portion a of the core'is a combined ferrule and-lower .securing element 14, consisting of ahollow tapered metallicbody formed of an upper part 15 and a lower part 16, which is of less diameter with respect to the part 15. The part 15 of the element 14 is formed with a polygonal-shaped bore 17, and the part 16 with a cylindrical bore l8,'having the wall thereof threaded. Thebore 18 is smaller. than. the bore 17. ilhe part-16 is of less leng'th than the terminal portion 4. The element 1 1 is secured upon the core by the threaded engagement of the terminal portion a with the threads of thewall of the bore 18 of the part 16. 7 The body portion 10 is interposed between the upper and lower securing elements. 7 The knob 12 abuts against the upper end of the'body portion, the part 15 of the element 14 abuts against the lower end of the body portion, and the part 16 of the element 14 threadedly engages with the terminal portion 4, and by this arrangement the body portion is clamped upon the core. The disks 5 are positioned on the core from the lower end thereof and moved to abut againstthe knob 12. The layer of cement is applied'before the disks arepositioned on the core. After the necessary number of disks have been mounted on the core to provide the body portion, the lower securing element is then connected to the core and the body portion clamped between the upper and lower securing elements.

What I claim is 1. A cane comprising a core having a polygonal-shaped intermediate portion and anupper and a lower cylindrical end porgneans interposed between said disks for securing them together, and a combined ferrule and securing. .element enclosing and threadedly engaging with said lower end portion and providing means in-connection with said knob for clamping said series of disks on the'core.

'2. A cane comprising acore having a polygonal-shapedintermediate portion and an upper and alower cylindrical end portion, said lower end portionbeing peripherally threaded, a knob enclosing and projecting from said upper end. portion, transversely extending means for fixedly securing saidknob to the core, a series offopposed disks mounted on said intermediate portion, means interposed between said disks for securingthem together, atwo-part combined ferrule and securing element, one of the parts of said element slidably mounted on'said intermediateportion and abutting against one end of said-series ofdisks and the other of said parts -tl1readedly-. engaging with said lower end portion to secure said element in position;

3. A cane comprising a core having a polygonal-shaped intermediate portion and an'upper and a'lower. cylindrical endportion, said lower end portion being peripherally threaded, a knob enclosing and projectingfrom said upper end portion, means for fixedly securing said knob to the core, a series of opposed disks mounted on said intermediate portion, means interposed between said disks for securing thenrt-ogether, a two-part combined ferrule and securing element, one of the parts of said element slidablymounted on said intermediate portion and abutting against one end of'said series of disks andthe other of said parts threadedly engaging with said lower end portion to secure said element in position.
