PAT
OFFICE.
GEORGE W. SHUGEES, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
BLADE HOLDER.
Application filed February 14, 1920. Serial No. 358,682.
An object of the invention is to provide a very cheap, simple, convenient and etiicient blade holder of this. character adapted to allow the blade to be quickly and easily inserted and clamped in place and held firmly during the operation of either sharpening the blade or shaving with the same, and adapted to readily release the blade when that is desirable. My invention comprises a blade holder having a main body and a clamping limb cooperating therewith, said body being of greater width than its clamping limb, thus allowingeasy access to the blade and one edge thereof, and protecting the other edge, and providing a very firm and resilient clampmg means.
The invention is adapted to be made mainly from a single sheet metal stamping, and is provided with a handle and with a latch. It comprises a body provided at one end with a clamping limb which is bent over into clamping position relative to the body and is adapted to allow a blade to be inserted between it and said body. Latch means are provided to latch the limb to the body in blade clamping position.
In order to facilitate the turning of the holder on a strop during the operation of stropping the blade, a rounded back is applied to the body and is preferably made as an extension of the body stamping extending opposite to the clamping edge of such body and bent over to form the rounded back.
Said stamping is also formed with a shank to which a. handle may be attached and the clamping limb is of spring metal bent to hold one end away from the body to form an open space between the body and limb into which the blade may be inserted; and the latch may be pivoted to the body and provided with a keeper to extend over the end of the limb to hold said limb and body in blade clamping position. 7
. The invention may be constructed without a solid rounded back and I shall illus trate it as constructed with a tubular back,
the ends of which are adapted to'be closed I by a plug or cap it it is desired to construct the device with an apparently solid back.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompany mg drawings, the sub oined detail desoription and the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention. Figure 1 is a perspective view of th blade holder with blade clamped in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder 7 shown in Fig. l with the parts in position to receive the blade which is shown partly inserted into the clamp.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the completed device shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the device without the handle as viewed from the handle end.
Fig. 5 is a plan of the sheet metal stamping adapted to form the holder apart from the latch. I i
Fig. 6 is a perspective of the latch detached.
Fig. 7 is a plan of a stamping for forming the latch.
The body 1 is of a predetermined width and is of a length somewhat greater than the length of the blade to be clamped. The clamping limb 2 is shown as formed of an extension from one end of the main body and a narrower width than said main body; said limb being bent over at 3 with a short resilient bend and the limb being normally separated from the main body by the resiliency of the bend at the body, and the spring of the limb. Said body and limb are adapted to be held by a latch 5 pivoted to the body by a rivet 6 and havin a keeper 7 adapted to extend over the tip 0? the limb when the limb is brought into blade clamping position. r
The rounded back 8 may be formed in any suitable way, but for cheapness and convenience of manufacture the stamping is provided with an upward extension 9 opllt) away from the b inding surface of the latch so, to accommodate the tip of the limb when said limb is brought into clamping position. The latch preferably extends rear- Wardly from the pivot to a point beyond the back of the main body and is there bent over to forma loop 17 loosely embracing the back of the main body and accommodating the pivotal movement of the latch to allow the keeper to be applied to and withdrawn from theend of the limb by pressure upon the loop in one or the other direction.
In practical operation the user will hold thehandle 15 in his hand in the Same manneras with a razor of the pivoted blade type andwill allow the limb to spring away from the, main body so as to form an opening into which the blade 18 to be sharpened or used may be inserted, Then by pressure upon the outwardly bent end of the limb, he will bring the tip of the limb into positionto be by the keeper and will then operate the latch with his forefinger tip to bring the keeper over the tip of the limb, thus clamping-the blade tightly. The blade will usually be adjusted to project about aquarter of iminch more or less from the clamping edges of th body and limb, and when so clamped, the operation of sharpening the blade or of shaving with the blade can be easily performed.
I claim.
1. A blade holder comprising a stamping of sheet metalprovided with a limb and a body wider than said limb; said sheet metal limb and body being bent to form a clamp for holding the blade; latch means to hold the body and limb in blade clamping position comprising a stamping pivoted to said body and having a keeper to engage said limb, said latch being bent to form a loop loosely embracing the back of the body and a rounded back formed by an extension oi said body.
2. The blade holder stamping set forth comprising a body portion, a limb portion extending from one end of the body portion, a back extension extending beyond the body portion at the edge opposite the edge adjacent the limb; said extension being adapted to be bent to'form a tubular back and said limb being adapted to be bent to form a clamp member to cooperate with the body portion; and a latch bent to form a keeper adapted to accommodate the tip of said limb when in clamping position, and bent to formv a loop loosely embracing the body portion.
in testimony whereot, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California. this 6th day of February, 1920.
GEORGE iV. SHUGERS.
