SAFETY-RAZOR-BLADE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 7, 1920.
Application filed November 22, 1919. Serial No. 339,882.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK MoEowN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, Province'of Manitoba, residing at #138 West 126th street, New York cit in the county of New York and State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razor-Blade Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safety razor blade holders, and has for object to provide such a holder that Wlll permit of ready attachment to the handle of conventional safety razors.
A further object of my invention resides in the unitary construction of the holder and to the blade engaging and clamping portions thereof, whereby the blade is centered in the holder and rigidly held against longitudinal or transverse displacement in use.
A still further object resides in the means for locking the clamping portions of the holder in operative position.
It is the object of my invention to produce such a device that will be simple and inexpensive in construction and positive and reliable in its operation, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the holder in operation;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the blade inserted and locked;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the blade inserted and locked;
Rig. 4 is a vertical sectional view showing the blade removed and the members in unlocked position;
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating the' locking means in detail.
' In the drawings, the portions marked A represent the handle of a conventional safety razor to which the razor holder 10 is adapted to be readily secured by a screwthreaded shank 11 when it is desired to strop a blade B as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. To impart resiliency to the screw-threaded shank 11 to adapt it for ready attachment to handles of various safety razors, a transverse slot 12 is provided.
A similar transverse slot 13 extends from the outer extremity of the holder 10 for a distance suflicient to permit the lengthwise insertion of a safety razor blade thus providing two semicircular blade clamping members 14 and 15. The semicircular portions 14 and 15'being adapted to engage the surfaces of the strop and provide bearing surface to support the blade normally in spaced relation thereto, so as to impart the proper angle to the blade with relation to the strop when rocked first in one direction and then the other during the process of sharpening.
transverse aperture 16 is provided to increase the resiliency of the two clamping members 14 and 15 and prevent undue bindmg of the end of the blade and insure uniform gripping action throughout the entire length of the blade when in locked position in the holder.
A pair of ears 17 and 18 are provided adjacent the slot 13 on opposite sides of each of the clamping members 14 and 15 to coact when in locked position with the usual apertures 19 in a safety razor blade, thereby insuring positive gripping and centering of the blade between the clamping members 14 and 15 and preventing longitudinal or transverse displacement of the blade duringsharpening. V i The outer extremity of each of the clamping members 14 and 15 is formed slightly reduced to provide shank portions 20 and 21, each being rounded and double or ogee curved adjacent their extremity to provide retaining shoulders 22 and 23 which are adapted to coact with a similar shoulder 24 formed in the inner surface of the'hollowed locking cap 25.
The outer surfaces of the shank 20 and 21 each provide a bearing surface the shape of a double or ogee curve 26 which runs into upper and lower parallel surfaces 27 and 28 as shown. The locking cap 25 is adapted to slide over the said bearing surfaces and effect the closing and locking or unlocking and opening of the clamping members'14 and 15 to secure or release the blade B as desired.
The clamping members 14 and 15 of the holder 10 being resilient and having a normal tendency to spring apart when the look.- ing cap 25 is moved to extended position the coaction of the shoulders 22 and 23 with the shoulder 24 prevent the separation of the c engaging locking cap 25 from the holder 10 when the same is moved to extended position to unlock the clamping members lei and 15.
It will be seen that the ends 20 and 21 are reduced sufficiently to form abutments 29 and 30, for engagement with the inner end of the cap 25 when said cap is in clamping position, whereby the outer surfaces of the clamping members are brought flush with the outer surface of the cap.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent of the United States is:
l. A safety razor blade holder comprising a pair of integral resilient blade clamping portions, a pair of coacting ears formed on opposite sides of each of said blade clamping members, a double or ogee curved shank and abutments formed adjacent the extremities of each of said blade clamping portions. and a locking cap coacting with said double or ogee curved shanks to have a limited telescopic movement thereon.
2. A safety razor blade holder compris ing a pair of relatively distended blade clamping members, and a slip cap normally said members at the o ter ends thereof when in clamped or distended position and means on said members and said cap to prevent accidental removal of the cap.
3. A safety razor blade holder comprising a pair of relatively distendedresilient blade clamping members, the outer ends of said members having cam surfaces, and a slip cap, said cap normally engaging said members and adapted to engage and house said am surfaces when the members are in clamped position.
4. A safety razor blade holder comprising a pair of relatively distended resilient blade clamping members, the ends of said members having cam or ogee curved bearing surfaces, and a slip cap having a similar interior cam surface engaging and adapted to position about or house said cam surfaced ends, when in clamped position.
5. A safety razor blade holder comprising a pair of relatively distended resilient blade clamping members, the ends of said members having like cam surfaces, engaging means at the ends of said cam surfaces, a slip cap, a socket within said cap in which said engaging means are adapted to seat,
said cap having an interior cam surface, whereby the cam surface of the cap may cooperate with the cam surfaces of the clamp ing members, for holding them in clamped position.
