Be it known that I, JOHN SCHADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden. and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scratch-Pad Filler Books; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to what are known as scratch pad filler books, and has for its object to provide a device of this descripl tion in which the filler pad may be detachably secured between flexible covers.

A further object of the invention is to so construct the cooperating parts that the pad, while readily secured in position, cannot become accidentally loosened from the book cover. f

A still further object of the invention is to provide an attaching clip that is secured to the inside of one of the covers, the underside or base portion whereof is cui away so as to present no obst-ruction to the ready securing of the filler book in position.

Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description and drawings in which latterd Figure 1 is a plan view of the inside of the book with its side covers spread.

Similar numerals of reference denote like parts iu the several figures of the drau'fing. l are the covers of the book made of any suitable material, and 2 is a resilient Tongue Y suitably spaced from the back or base por-l tion 3, the latter being cut away from its corners on lines that converge toward the upper portion of the base, so as to provide divcrging leg portions 4.

Since these spurs are in triangular disposition, it will be clear that the clip, which comprises the tongue and back portion, will be securely held to the cover and is not at all likely to tear loose therefrom.

lVhile these spurs have been specified it will, of course, be understood that they ine-rely afford a preferable means forsecuring the clip to the cover.

.fait the back of the tongue and at the sides thereof upstanding shoulders 7 are formed, and the front of the tongue is preferably slightly upturned for the purpose presently to be explained.

The scratch pad itself is denotedv by the numeral 8 and consists of a considerable number of blank leaves which are bound at one end by a fabric binding 9, and a comparatively stiff cover portion 10 faces the pad and is secured by the binding 9.

Through this binding and cover portion is cut a slit 11 substantially as long as the width of the tongue 2, and in attaching the pad to the cover the tongue is inserted through this slit, the slight upturning of the tongue facilitating this, until the slit has passed over and beyond the shoulders 7 at the rear of the tongue, whereupon the slit portion l1 will fall behind said shoulders, so that it will be impossible for the pad to accidentally become detached from the cover.

The binding 9 is a comparatively tough fabric, and when secured to the cover portion 10 by glue is particularly well adapted for the cutting rof the slit 11, and the latter is, therefore, not likely to become mutilated or distorted.

There may be a plurality of these slits and tongues in the event of larger sizes, but in the ordinary small sizes of scratch pad a single slit and tongue are sufficient.

The tongue is formed from sheet metal and the base portion is out away in the manner heretofore described, so that when the tongue is inserted through the slit 11, the

wall of this slit will meet with no obstruction to the ready insertion of the pad in position.

Of course, when it becomes necessary to renew a pad, the cover 10 is torn or cut from the tongue, since the slit portion will not readily disengage itself from behind the shoulders 7.

instead of two shoulders formed at the rear portion of the sides of the tongue, these shoulders may be formed at any part of said portion, or a single shoulder may be formed, and the invention is not restricted in this respect.

I claim zl. ln a scratch pad filler book, flexible cover portions, a sheet metal tongue which is backed by a base portion that is secured to one of the cover portions, said tongue provided with upturned shoulders at the rear portions of its sides, and a bound scratch pad provided with a comparatively thick tace cover having a slit extending crosswise through the comparatively thick cover and binding, whereby said pad may be secured between the cover portions by inserting said tongue through the slitl with the wall of the latter positioned behind said shoulders. M

2. The combination of flexible cover portions, a sheet metal tongue having a base port-ion cut away from its 'front edge toward the rear thereof and having depending spurs formed at the outer ends and at the inner middle extremity of said portion, whereby the latter may be secured to one ot said cover portions, said tongue having upstanding` shoulders at the rear of its side edges,

and a bound scratch pad provided with cever portion having a slit cut therein, said tongue and slit being engaged with the wall ot the latter positioned behind said shoulders to hold the pad between the cover portions.

3. The combination ot a inc-tal base portion comprising two diverging leg-like elee ments at the extremities of which are formed spurs, a spur being also formed at the upper middle ot said portion, a tongue integral witn the base portion and extending above the same in spaced relation thereto and having at the rear of its sides upturned sheulders, tiexible cover portions through one et which said spurs are driven and clinched to permanently secure said base portion, and a bound scratch pad provided with a comparatively thick face cover having a slit extending crosswise therethrough, whereby7 said pad may be secured between the lexible cover portions by inserting said tongue through said slit until one wall of the latter has passed beyond and is positioned behind said shoulders.
