UNITED STATES THEODORE DOSSENBACH, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
PORTABLE BAND STAND.
Application filed September 24, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE DOSSEN- nnoI-I, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Band Stands, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to portable band stands, and an object of the same is to provide a band stand which may be folded into compact form in order to permit it to be carried to and set up at any desired place, Another object of the invention is to provide a band stand havin a top and a platform both made of sections, the sections being so connected that they may be folded together into compact form while, at the same time, providing a space which may receive band instruments, chairs and other paraphernalia for the band. Another object of the invention is to provide a portable band stand which may be readily folded into compact form and quickly separated to produce a platform having sections at different levels and a top acting as a sounding board and arranged above the plaform.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 shows the vehicle in side elevation and in open position;
Fig. 2 shows the vehicle in side elevation and in closed position;
Fig. 3 shows the vehicle in rear elevation;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4- l, Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a similar section showing the adjacent parts in folded position;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 66, Fig. 1;
Fig. 7 is a top view of a portion of the vehicle;
Fig. 8 is a section on the line 88, Fig. 1;
Fig 9 one of the hinged connections between the hinged parts;
Fig. 10 is a detail view of one of the supporting braces; and
Fig. '11 is a fragmentary top view of the rear end of the vehicle.
Referring to the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated, 1 indicates the body of the vehicle which may be in the form of a self-propelled or motor vehicle.
Serial No. 502,905.
This body is provided with two fixed main central platform sections 2 and 3, in this instance, arran ed in different horizontal planes, the rearmost main central platform section being): in a lower plane than the foremost section and both sections being arranged directly in rear of the seat for the operator of the vehicle. The vehicle has a main central top section 5 arranged over platform sections 2 and 3 and supported at its forward end by a vertical wall 6 situated in rear of the seat at and at the forward edge of the platform section. 3. The rear portion f the top 5 is supported, in this instance, by brace poles 7 which are mounted on the rear edge of the platform section 2. These brace poles have right and left hand threads 8 and 9 respectiveiy arranged at their upper and lower ends and fitting respectively in sockets 10 and 11. The main central platform sections 2 and 3 extend farther outwardly at the side of the vehicle than does the top 5, and the top has a projecting edge 5*. i 7 At each side of the main central platform, main side platform sections 2 and F5 may be provided, these sections Being hinged re spectively to the main central platform tions 2 and 3 by hinges 12, which have removable pintlcs 13. Hinged to the main central top section 5 are main side top sec tions 5 secured by hinges 12 with removable pintles, these hinges being so arranged that the ledge 5 bridges the joints between the sections to keep out rain. As the main central platform sections 2 and 3 are wider than the main central top section 5, the main side top sections 5 will fold downwardly, as in dicated in Fig. 5, on the inner sides of the main side platform sections 2 and 3. The main side sections 2 and 3 may have legs 14 hinged to the under: side thereof at 15 and adapted to fold inwardly in parallel relation with the sections 2 and 3 when the sections 2 and 3 are folded vertically, as shown in Fig. 5. In order to support the main side top sections above the main side platform sections, brace poles 7 are employed which through right and left hand threads 8 and 9 detachably connect respectively with the sockets l0 and 11 on the top sections 5 and the platform sections 2" and a respectively.
Arranged at the rear of the main central platform section 9 an auxiliary central platform section 16. This auxiliary central platform 16 is hinged at 17 to a ledge 18 which by brackets 19 is supported in a lower horizontal plane than the main central platform section 2. The main central top section 5 does not extend so far to the rear as does the ledge 18 and an auxiliary central top section 20 is hinged at 21 to the rear edge of the main central top section 5 under the ledge 23*, being supported at its rear or free edge by brace poles 7 which are connected to the auxiliary central top section 20 and the auxiliary central platform section 16 in the same manner as similar poles used in this invention. It is apparent that, when the auxiliary central top section 20 is swung downwardly, it will lie on the inner side of the auxiliary central platform section 16, when the latter is swung upwardly, :as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 11. The auxiliary' central platform section 16 may be supported in its lowered position by legs which are pivoted at 23 to the under side of said auxiliary central platform section 16 and are foldable in parallel relation to said auxiliary platforn'i section as illustrated in Fig. 2.
:xuxiliary side platform sections 24 may be provided in rear of the main side platform sections 2 and these auxiliary side platform sect-ions may be connected with the :urxiliary central platform section 16 by hangers 25 which are secured to opposite sides of the auxiliary central platform sec- [ion 16 to receive a timber or beam piece 2.6 on such auxiliary side plat-forms 24. Legs 27 pivoted at 28 to the auxiliary side platform sections 24 may serve to sustain the outer sides of the auxiliary side platform sections. This arrangement makes the auxi-liary side platform sections detachable so that they may he removed in order to permit the foldingof the main side platform sections 2 and the auxiliary central platform sections 16.
For covering the auxiliary side platform sections 24, two auxiliaryside 'top sections 2) may be provided which through hinges 30 are connected to opposite sides of the auxiliary top section 20. These hinges permit the top sections .29 to told on the upper side of the auxiliary top section 20 when the latter is swung downwardly, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 11, one pair of hinges 30 being of greater length than the other so that their axis of turning is in spaced relation to the plane of the uppermost face of the top section 20, in order that the other top auxiliary section may fold first into parallel relation with the top section 20 to establish overlapping relation between the two auxiliary side top sections 529. Posts 7 detachably support the auxiliary top sec tions above the auxiliary side platform sections 2.4, and have right and left hand threaded portions at opposite ends detachalny engaging in sockets 10 and 11. Hinges with removable pintles 13 will connect the auxiliary side top sections 29 with the main side top sections 5. Other details of construction which. may be employed are cable rails 2-31 connecting the brace poles T, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. All of the top set-tans may be made hollow, as indicated at 2, the top wall being made of canvas, and 11316 under wall 33 being in the form of a sounding board which will modify the sound in an advantageous manner. Receptacles or compartments 34 with hinged closures 235. may be arranged on opposite sides of the vehicle under the main platform sections 2' and 3 to receive the brace poles 7, cables 3 and other articles. Fasten ing devices 56 of any suitable type may be employed for securing the platform sections in elevated position.
From the :lioregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a portable band stant'i which may be moved to any desired position and opened up to provide a stand for a large number of band instrumentplayers. The platform has sections at different levels or he ghts to obtain a band stand of conventional form, i iermi'l'ting the musicians to be positioned in the usual manner. A top lJl'OYltlQti ihich modifies the sound so that a desirable ctl'cct is secured. The top and the platform are made of sections which are compact relation. \Vhen foldable into folded. a space is provided adapted to receive the platform sections 2 1, collapsihle chairs andv certain of the band instruments. The top sections are sustained against swinging upwardt by braces which interlock with the top sectionsandthe platform sections, so as to tie the top and the plat form togethin while permitting their discO'JlllGCtlOll in order to provide for the folding of the sections.
