To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA P. OLDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Rosa, in the county of Walton and State of Florida, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in WVheelbarrow Step- Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved wheel barrow step ladder, one object of the invention being the provision of a wheel barrow construction that is readily convertible into a step ladder, and vice versa.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a household article, which is readily changed from a step ladder to a wheel barrow, or vice versa and embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts that render the same exceedingly useful and practical.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a wheel barrow step ladder, which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1.is a rear elevation of the device when set up as a step ladder.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device when assembled as a wheel barrow.
Fig. f is a fragmentary plan view of the step ladder section showing by full lines one position of its swinging step and by dotted lines the other position thereof.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical transverse sectional view showing in detail the pin and eye therefor.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view therethrough, the ladder section showing the swinging step in operative position.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the two main strips of the step ladder, having the hand grips 11, and such strips being connected together by the head piece 12 and the intermediate steps 13.. The four irregular shaped pieces 14 are secured to the outer faces at the head ends of the strips 10, and have the hinges '15 connected thereto to hingedly attach the twoleg forming strips 16, which are suitably braced by the rods 17. -The two hinged members 18 are provided to limit the extensionof the legs and strips 10 when the device is used as a step ladder, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The lower step 19 of the ladder is swingingly mounted to the strips 10 by means of the L-shaped plates or arms 20, which are supported by the pins 21. The limiting plates 22 are carried by the step 19, and prevent the step from passing between the strips 10, but do permit the same to assume the dotted line position in Fig. 4:, when the device is used as a wheel barrow. The upper step of the ladder is made in two sections 23,
each one of which is supported by the bracket or brace 24, the ends of the sections being spaced at 25 to permit the passage of the wheel 26, carried upon the shaft 27, which in turn is mounted in the movable journals 28 attached to the strips 16. Thus the shaft 27 and wheel can be removed when desired, such journal boxes 28 being preferably split, to permit this.
The two catches 29 and pins 30 are connected to the strips 10 and 16, so that they may be secured together, as shown in Fig. 3. The wheel barrow legs 31 are carried by the strips 10 and braced by the braces 32. These are fixed, as they are not in the way when the device is used as a step ladder.
The box or body 33 of the wheel barrow is provided with cylindrical pins 34, which removably fit in the metal eyes 35 carried by the strips 10, the cleats 36 being carried by the strips 10 and 16, to receive the braces or standards 37 to support the side of the body. By this means the body may be attached or detached at pleasure.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that a wheel barrow step ladder constructed according to this invention will be easily convertible, and will be very rigid when used either as a step ladder or wheel barrow.
What I claim, as new, is
1. A structure of the character described, comprising swingingly connected ladder and prop sections, a wheel journaled on the prop section near the pivotal connection of said section with the ladder section, pivotally jointed braces swingingly connected to said sections and a swinging step supported in the ladder section beyond the series of permanent steps thereof and having stops for limiting the swinging movement thereof.
2. A structure of the character described comprising spaced side strips, a plurality of permanent steps arranged between the same, a head piece fixed to the side strips, leg
