Description
P. HAYS.
l Carpet-Stretchers.' No.l52,108. Parenredjunedlsnam.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PULASKI HAYS, OF COOL BANK STATION, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-STRETCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,108, dated June 16, 1874 application filed v March 21, 1874.
To all ywhom Iit may concern Be it known that I, PULAsKr HAYs, of Cool Bank Station, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpet-Stretcher, of which the following is a specification Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section of my improved carpet-stretcher. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A B are the heads, which are made three feet, more or less, in length, the forward edges of which are provided with hooks or prongs O, upon which the edges of the carpet are hooked to be' stretched. rFhe heads A B are strengthened by braces D, and have guardblocks E attached to their ends, which keep the heads A B at such a distance from the walls that the carpet can be conveniently tacked, and which also serve as stops, should one head reach the wall sooner than the other, to hold said head until the other end of the carpet has been brought into place. To the middle parts of the heads A B are attached the outer ends ofthe bars F G. The bar F is slotted longitudinally to receive the har G. The bar G is made in two or more sections, hinged to each other, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the stretcher may be more conveniently handled, and so that it may be used in a larger or smaller room, as may be desired. The end of the end section of the bar G and the end of the slot in the bar F are beveled, as shown in Fig. l, so that the said section may rise out of the said slot automatically as the bars are pushed together. To the upper side of the bar G are attached spurs or teeth H, for the engaging end of the pawl I to take hold of in applying power to the stretcher. The pawl I is pivoted to a lever, J, the lower end of which is pivoted to the box K attached to the slotted forward end of the bar F. L is a small block, which tits into a small compartment in the rear part of the box K, to act as a pawl to hold the bars F G in place while the pawl I is being drawn back for another purchase. The rear edge of the lower end of the block L is beveled oif, as shown lin Fig. l, so that the teeth H may readily pass it as the bar G is forced forward, and which will prevent the Said bar G from being forced back while the pawl I is being drawn back to take another purchase. The block L is connected with the lever J by a small cord, M, so that it will not be lost, and so that it can be readily withdrawn to allow the bars F G to be pushed together.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pronged guarded heads A B E, combined with bars F G, one slotted, the other in hinged sections, and the whole susceptible of extension in the manner described.
PULASKI HAYS.
