Be it known that LLouin STERN, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto looks' and particularly to that class thereof which employs a pair of opposed bolts movable in opposite directions for `engaging a keeper. The object of my improvements is to provide a lock of the class specified, of simple construction and having interlocking features which render it of superior security.
To these ends my improvements comprise features illustrated in theirnpreferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a horizontal section substantially on line 1 1 of Figure 2. Figure 2 is a front elevation partly in section on line 2-2 of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the keeper. Figures 4 and 5 are views similar to that of Figure 2 but showing the parts of the'lock in different positions to illustrate the operation of my improvements. The gures of the drawings are all to one scale. l
The present invention is in the nature of improvements on the invention set forth in Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,215,888 granted to me February 13, 1917 and to which reference may be had.
That earlier patent included a latch which in the present invention is replaced by a bar, and which bar is operated for interlocking relation with either one or both of two opposed bolts. Also in the present case the keeper is of peculiar design; it being adapt-- ed for receiving the bar and either or both of the bolts, and which bar and bolt or bolts interlock within said keeper. Other features of novel utility will appear in the following detailed description.
Directing attention particularly to Figures 1 and 2, lock case 3 is adapted to be secured by screws 4 to the inner side of a door 5, or other member which itis desired to fasten by said lock to an adjoining abutment or jamb, as 6, and to which latter is secured keeper 7 by screws, as 8. Within said case 3 are one or a pair of opposed bolts 9, 10, andcarrying- shanks 11, 12 therefor, respectively. As illustrated said bolts are in axial alignment and said shanks are mounted for movement in parallelism with the common axis of said bolts. Said slianks are actuated by rocking lever 13, pivoted at 14 and-liaving pins for engagement with slots in said shanks, as pin 15, for the slot in shank 11.
Rotatable actuator 16, having pin 17 for engagement with slot 18 in said lever 13, is
pivotally mounted in wall 3a of said case and may be rotated by knob 19. Forholding said lever in the'position of Figure 5, with bolts 9 and 10 in engagement with keeper 7, catch 21 is provided. This catch is pivotally mounted at 36`below lever 13 and is urged in anti-clockwise direction by Gov spring 37.` When the left hand end of lever 13, Figures 4 and 5, swings downwardly,
' post 38 thereof engages the nose of catch 21 and swings that catch in clockwise direction until said post passes under said nose,
when the catch snapsback over post 38 to the' position of Figure 5. For unlocking said catch, pin17 engages the nose of said catch and pushes it to the right, Figure 5,
just as said pin enters slot 18 of lever 13.
The 'several features of my lock, already describedk herein, are essentially the same as those shown in my above' mentioned patent.
vThe features of novelty in the present caseJ willv now be 4particularly described. About midway of case 3 in Figure 2 is bar 22 mounted and adapted for movement in a direction substantially transverse to the direction of movement of bolt 9 and of bolt 10, and preferably midway therebetween. Said bar is provided with seat 23 for the reception of end 9a of bolt 9, and may be pro-y vided with a similar opposite seat 24 for the reception of the similar end of bolt 10. Said bar has arm 25 extending upwardly to the left, Figure 2, and slot 26 therein is in sliding engagement with block 27, Xed to said case. Said arm 25 is also provided with horns 28, 29, between which, pin 17 of rotatable actuator 16 engages for moving Y i said arm and bar 22. Rocking lever 13 has horn 30 for engagement with the upperl Y edge 22a of bar 22, for reventing the movement of said lever until after said bar has been moved through a portion of its stroke, as from the position of Figure 2 to that of Figure 4, so that said lever cannot move prematnrely yand carry bolts 9 and 10 into interference with bar 22.
Actuator 16 may be provided with depressed portion 31 in its periphery for engagement with spring-urged detent 35, for locating said actuator in idle position at either end of its stroke.
Keeper 7 is provided with one or two seats 32, 33 for the reception of bolts V9 and 10, respectively, and with seat 34, substantially transverse lto `one or both said seats 32, 33, for the reception vof bar 22. Said seat 34 extends transversely a material distance to the right, Figures 2, 4 and 5, beyond seats 32, 33, to lpermit bar .22 to penetrate said keeper sufficiently to present its seats 28, v24, which are preferably remote from leading end 22b of said bar, Figure 5, in alignment with bolts 9 and 10.
The operation of my improved lock is as `follows: Ihe several parts being in the position of lFigure 2, -rotary actuator 16 is rotated in clockwise direction until pin 17 enters between horns 28, 29, of arm 25 of bar 22. Said actuator continuing its clockwise movement, arm 25 and bar 22 are moved to the Aright fto the :position of Figure 4, when the upper edge 22a of said bar has nearly passed out 'from vunder horn 30 on lever 13. Pin 17 then enters slot 18 in lever -13 and moves that slotted -end of said lever downwardly, thereby moving shank 11 and lits bolt 9 downwardly, and shank 12 and its Vengaged by detent 35.
Vbolt 10 upwardly., `toward bar 22.- Said 4bar 22, in the meantime, has continued its movement to lthe right and eventually reaches the position of Figure 5, .and after it has reached that position, bolts 9 and 10, having continued their respective :movements toward each other, pass through seats32, 33, respectively,.in keeper 7 andenter seats 23, 24, respectively, in bar '22. Said bar vand bolts are thus interlocked. with each other within vkeeper 7. The rotation of actuator 16 is continued 'thereafter until depression 31 :is The operation of 'unlocking is the reverse of the operation of locking, just described.
No detailed description of the operation of catch 21 is deemed necessary as that catch and its coacting members are fully described in my above mentioned vpatent and are not a part of the present improvements.
I claim:
1. A lock including in combination a casing, a bolt and a bar which in their unlocked positions respectively lie within said casing, means forprojecting said bar outn wardly from within said casing into the path of said bolt, and means for projecting said bolt thereafter outwardly vfrom within said casing `into engagement with said bar.
2. A lock including in combination acasing, two movable ymembers adapted for projection in substantially transverse directions respectively from within said casing to withoutsaid casing, means in one of said members for receiving the end of the other member, means for projecting the receiving member into receiving position, and means for projecting the other member `thereafter into 4engagement with said receiving member.
8. A lock including incombination a casing, two movable members adapted for .projection'in substantially transverse directions respectively from within said casing to without said casing, 4one of said movable members being provided with a seat for the reception ofthe other of said movable members, and an actuator mounted in saidcasing .for moving the receiving member into receiving position, said actuator being elicient thereafter for moving the other vmember into engagement with said receiving member.
