To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. FINK, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of East, Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in- Oar-Door Locks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in car door locks as applied more particularly to the sliding doors of box cars having lower and upper guide rails for the corresponding edgeS of the door, although, it is equally applicable to any single or double sliding door or doors opening in one direction or the reverse.
One of the objects is to enable the same device to be used on either of the upright edges of a sliding door to'lock the same in its closed position both at the top and at the bottom, and at the same timeto permit the locking members to be easily and quickly withdrawn by simple turning movement of a rock arm to which the locking bars are connected.
Another object is to provide both locking bars with offset portions extending across the rear edge of the door in closeproximity to the guide rails and to provide said ofl'set portions with locking bolts movable into and out of engagement with suitable bolt openings in the guides thereby constituting a two-point bearing for each of the lower and upper edges of the door, one bearing being in the connectionvbetween the locking bolt and its corresponding guide rail, andthe other bearing. A further object is to provide the lower and upper corners ofthe rear edge of the door with metal bracketscarrying suitable guides for thelocking bolts so as to assure proper entry of the bolts into their respective keepers in the lower and upper rails without special attention on the part of the operator other than to see that the'door is closed.
Other objects and uses relating to specific parts of the device will be brought out in the following description.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a box car bodyand door together with my improved locking device, partly in section, in its locking position by full lines and in it's unlocked pos'tion by dotted lines.
Figs. 2, 3 and i are detail sectional views taken respectively on lines 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 Fig.1.
In order that my invention will be clearly understood, I have shown a part of a car body -A- and a part of a slide door -13- capable of covering the usual opening in one side of the body and adapted tobe held in place against downward swinging movement by lower and upper guides a and -'a-, said guides being of the usual double flanged type and extending across the adjacent edgesof the door len hwise of the car body having one flange secured to said body and its other flange overlapping the adjacent portion of the outer face of the door.
The locking device as shown comprises a base plate -1 having a central outwardly projecting stud -2- upon which is cen: trally fulcrumed or pivoted a rock arm 3 having its opposite ends provided with separate pairs of lugs -4, those of each pair being arranged in spaced relation for receiving between them a hand lever -5- which is also pivotally mounted upon the stud2r coaxial with the axis of movement of the .rock arm A pair of locking bars 6 are pivoted at one end at 7- to the rocking member 3 at opposite sides of the fulcrum or pivot 2, the other ends of said locking bars being provided with angular ofit'sets 8- forming flanges 9 which extend transversely across the adjacent portions of the rear edge of the door B-.

:It' is now evident that by providing the locking bars 6 with the stop shoulders or flanges 9 across the rearedge of the door closeto the keepers 10- brings the resistance to the opening of the door close to the keepers so that the keepers and flanges may assist each otherin firmly holding the door in its closed position when the bolts are locked.
The pivots 7- for the locking bars .6 are preferably placed between the lugs 1 of each pair and the pivot .2. but are spaced a sufficient distance from said pivot to withdraw the locking: bolts from their keepers 11 or out of engagement with the guides a and a" when the rocking member -3 is moved through an arc of not greater than from its looking position.

In operation, assuming that the. parts are in the'position shown by full lines in Fig.1, and that it is desired to open the door, the seal -19 may be broken, the lever -5 pulled out of engagement with the staple 17- and then turned either to the :right or to the left as may be desired.

In combination with a box car body and a sliding door therefor, a base plate secured to the outer face of the door near the rear edge thereof, a rock-arm pivoted to said plate and directly in opposite directions from its pivot, lock bars pivoted to said rock-arm at opposite sides of the firstnamed pivot and provided with flanges abutting against the rear edge of the door near the lower and upper edges thereof, said bars being provided with bolts for engaging keepers above and below the door.

In combination with a box car body and a sliding door therefor, keepers on the body near the rear edge of the door when the latter is closed, a rook-arm .pivotally mounted on the door to swing in a plane parallel therewith, locking bars pivoted to the rock-arm at opposite sides of the firstnamed pivot and provided with abutments for engaging the rear edge of the door near the upper and lower edges thereof, said abutments being provided with extensions movable into and out of engagement with their respective keepers as the rock-arm is moved in reverse directions,

In combination with a box car body and a sliding door therefor, keepers on the body near the rear edge of the door when the latter is closed, a rock-arm pivotally mounted on the door to swing in a plane parallel therewith, locking bars pivoted to the rock-arm at opposite sides of the firstnamed pivot and provided with abutments for engaging the rear edge of the door near the upper and lower edges thereof, said abutments being provided with extensions movable into and out of engagement with their respective keepers as the rook-arm is moved in reverse directions, and means for locking the rock-arm and locking bars against relative movement.
