This invention relates to door operating mechanisms.
An object of the invention is to provide a door operating mechanism for use in connection with a railway car, including a frame member and a sliding door member and wherein a bracket provided with a vertically extending slot is secured to one of said members and is adapted to be engaged by an actuating portion forming part of a lever pivotally mounted upon the other of said members, whereby swinging movement of the lever forces the door in opening and closing directions, means being provided for co-operation with the operating mechanism whereby a latch member on the lever is utilized for looking the door in fully or partly closed positions.
Other and further objects of the invention will more clearly appear from the description and claims hereinafter following.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a fragment of a door frame and sliding door of a railway car, showing the invention applied thereto, the door being locked in fully closed position. Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing the invention operating to lock the door in partially to open position. Figure 3 is an enlarged traverse vertical sectional View taken on a line corresponding substantially to line 3-3 of Figure 1. Figure 4 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view of the invention on the line 4c of Figure 1. And Figure 5 is a horizontal sectional view corresponding substantially to the line 55 of Figure 1.
As shown in the drawing, 10 denotes a portion of the door frame of a railway car, said frame being provided with a rabbet 11 adapted for the reception of the forward edge of a sliding door, a fragment of which is indicated by the numeral 12. Secured to the frame portion 10 by means of bolts 13 is a bracket 4 1 1. Said bracket is provided with an extension 15 overhanging the rabbeted. portion of the frame member 10, as best shown in Figure 1. The extension 15 is provided with a vertically extending channel or groove 16 open at the bottom as indicated 17 and closed at the top as indicated at 18. The bracket 14 is further provided with a depending portion 19 having an angular horizontally disposed projection 20 provided with an aperture 21 adapted for the reception of a securing bolt hereinafter referred to.
Mounted upon the door member 12 by means of bolts 2222 is a horizontally arranged strap 23, the rear end portion of which is provided with an upstanding keeper 24; having an opening indicated at 25 for the reception of a securing bolt as hereinafter referred to. The strap 23 adjacent its forward end is provided with a socket portion 26 adapted for the reception of a boss 27 formed on the lever 28, the lever being pivotally secured to the strap 23 by means of a rivet 29, the inner head of which is accommodated in a cut-out portion 30 provided in the face of the door. At one side of the pivot pin the lever is formed with a laterally extending actuating portion 31 adapted to enter and leave the channel 16 through the entrance 17 and to bear upon the walls of the groove or channel in effecting movement of the door in opening and closing directions when the lever is operated.
At the opposite side of the pivot pin 28, the lever is provided with an angularly off-set section 32, and provided with a guide means comprising curved portions 33'33, and an opening 34 in the ofi-set section 32, the section 32 and guide means being spaced apart, and each provided with laterally extended spaced lugs 3535. Slidably and rotatably mounted in the guide means and section 32 is a locking bolt 36, said bolt being provided with a laterally extending lug 37 adapted to be moved into position between the lugs 35-35 in one position of the parts. When the lug 37 is rotated from a position between the lugs 35-35 the bolt may be moved in a longitudinal direction and is adapted to engage either the keeper 20 on the bracket 14 or the keeper 24 on the strap 23, depending upon i the position of the lever, the bolt being held against complete removal by the outer head of the rivet 29 when movedin one direction and by the offset 32 when moved in the oppo site direction. The lugs and 37, are
provided with apertures 38 adapted for the reception of a sealing device, not shown.
In operation, assuming the door to be in closed position, with the lower end of the locking bolt 36 engaging the keeper 20, and it is desired to open the door, the sealing member which may be extended through the lugs 35-35 and 37 is broken, and the bolt 36 rotated so as to disengage the lug 37 from between the lugs 3535, after which the bolt may be raised, freeing the same from the keeper 20. Swinging movement of the lever in a counter-clockwise direction brings about movement of the actuating portion 31, which bearing against the left-hand wall of the groove or channel 16 forces the door in an opening direction. If it is desired to lock the door in partly open position, the lever is moved in a counter-clockwise direction a sufiicient distance just short of moving the actuating portion 31 from the channel 16, thereby positioning the bolt 36 whereby the same may be moved toward the free end of the lever into engagement with the keeper 24:, after which the lug 37 on the bolt may be rotated into position between the lugs 3535 formed on the lever and a sealing member passed through the openings of the lugs, the door thereby being locked in partially open position. If it is not desired to lock the door in partly open position, the actuating portion 31 is moved completely out of the channel 16, and the door 12 pushed by hand to fully open position. In closing the door 12, the same is moved forwardly toward the frame member 10 until such time as the engaging portion 31 may be inserted into the channel16, after which the lever may be moved in clockwise direction, forcing further closing movement of the door 12, by reason of the engagement of the ac-- tuating portion 31 of the lever with the right-hand wall of the groove or channel 16 of the bracket 14. l/Vhen the lever reaches a substantially vertical position, the locking bolt 36 will be in position so that the same may be engaged with the keeper 20, after which the bolt may be rotated to position with the lug 37 thereon between the lugs 3535 on the lever, and a sealing member extended through the lugs 3535 and lug 37.
While I have herein shown and described what I consider the preferred manner of carrying out the invention, the same is merely illustrative, and I contemplate all changes and modifications which come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member and a door member; of operating means secured to one of said members, said member having a keeper connected thereto; a lever on the other of said members provided with actuating means adapted to interengage with said operating means whereby swinging movement of said lever effects movement of said door in opening and closing directions, said lever being provided with guide means having spaced projections; and a bolt slidably and rotatably mounted in said guide means and adapted to engage said keeper, said bolt being provided with a projection rotatable to position between the projections on said guide means for locking the bolt to lock the operating means and lever in interengaging relation.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member and a door member; of an operating element secured to one of said members, said member having a keeper connected thereto; a lever and a keeper on the other of said members, said lever being provided with actuating means adapted to interengage with said operating element whereby swinging move ment of said lever effects movement of said door in opening and closing directions, said lever being provided with guide means; a bolt mounted in said guide means and movable to position to engage the keeper on either of said members to lock the door mem her in fully or partly closed positions.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member and a door member; of an operating element se cured to one of said members, said member having a keeper connected thereto; a lever and a keeper on the other of said members, said lever being provided with actuating means adapted to interengage with said operating element whereby swinging movement of said lever effects movement of said door in opening and closing directions, said lever being provided with guide means; a bolt mounted in said guide means and movable to position to engage the keeper on either of said members to lock the door member in fully or partly closed positions, said bolt being rotatably mounted in said guide means, and said bolt and guide means being provided with interlocking projections detachably engageable upon rotation of said bolt.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member and a door member; of means secured to one of said members and provided with a vertically extending channel, said member having a keeper connected therewith: a lever on the other of said members and a keeper connected to said member, said lever being provided with an actuating portion adapted to enter said channel whereby swinging move ment of said lever effects movement of said door in opening and closing directions, said lever being provided with an off-set having an aperture therein and spaced guide portions; a bolt slidably and rotatably. mounted in said guide means and said aperture, said bolt being engageable with the keeper on either of said members to lock said door in difi'erent positions, said bolt having a lug rotatable to a position between said ofi-set and said guide portions and adapted to be held in position by a seal.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame member and a sliding door member; of operating mechanism for forcing said door in opening and closing directions, said mechanism comprising an operating element fixed to one of said members, and a lever element pivotally mounted on the other of said members; detachable interengaging means on said lever and operating elements whereby swinging movement of said lever efiects movement of said door in opening and closing directions, said interengaging means comprising a projection on one of said elements and a channel in the other of said elements for the reception of said projection; and a mechanism associated with said device for locking said door in two positions to hold the same in fully closed or in partially closed positions.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination with cooperating door members relatively movable toward and from each other; of means secured to one of said members said means having an elongated channel; a continuous lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the other of said members said lever being provided with an operating handle extension and an actuating portion adapted to enter said channel and engage the walls defining the latter, whereby swinging movement of said lever effects movement of the door members relatively toward and from each other to close and open the same; and locking mechanism, including a locking member on said handle, a cooperating locking member on each of said door members, and means for locking said first named member to either of said last named members, for locking the door in two different positions to hold the same either fully closed or partially closed.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with cooperating relatively sliding door members; of a guide member provided with a guide channel secured to one or said door members; a keeper on said guide member; a lever pivoted on the other door member; a keeper on said last named door member, said lever having means thereon engaging within the guide channel, whereby swinging movement of said lever to a predetermined degree efiects limited movement of the door members with respect to each other in opening and closing directions, and swinging movement of the lever beyond said degree eii'ects detachment of engaging means thereof from said channel; and means carried by the lever and cooperating with the keep-
