LOCK AND LATCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. THORNLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of locks, and pertains more particularly to a lock which is provided with a plurality of latches, all of which may be thrown or set by one turn of a latching member.
This invention has for its object to provide a lock of this character, which may be used to latch a door at three or more places simultaneously, that is at its top, bottom and sides.
Further, it is the object to provide a look as above set forth which is particularly adapted for use on steel gymnasium locker doors. Also it is intended to provide a lock, the latching member of which is in close connection with the lock or may form part thereof.
A further object is to construct a multilatching device which is applicable to locks already manufactured, and which may be applied to key looks or combination locks.
With the above and further objects in View as will hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the back plate of a steel door, showing my improved lock applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detached front elevation of the invention, showing the parts in latched position. Fig. 3 is a View similar to the above, showing the parts in unlatched position. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal cross-sectional view, taken on line 4r 1 of Fig. 1, but showing the parts in latched and locked relation. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the central latch plate. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a cam disk employed to throw the latching members, and Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view of a lock showing my invention used with combination locking mechanism.

are employed in the construction of steel lockers or closets and gates. Mounted upon the rear side of said cross bar 1, and adj acent the front edge of the door, is a casing 3, said casing constituting a housing for the locking mechanism and the latch operating mechanism. Said casing is constructed preferably of a continuous sheet of metal and is secured to the bar 1 by means of rivets or screws fastened through the bar 1 and lateral flanges 1 formed on said casing 3. Located within said casing 3, and bolted or otherwise secured to its bottom face, is a locking mechanism 5, which is carried in a housing provided with flanges for its fastening to said casing 3, and has projecting from its front face a barrel 6. Said barrel 6 is the tumbler barrel or cylinder of the locking mechanism, and receives the key 7 by means of which'the locking mechanism is actuated, and controls the movement of the lock-bolt 8. Rotatably mounted upon said barrel 6 is a hollow or dished head 9, having a cylindrical portion 10 which extends the entire length of said barrel 6, and a shoulder 11 which bears against the plate or cross bar 1. The inner end of said cylindrical portion is cut away to form parallel seats, said seats forming a fastening means for a cam plate 12, said cam plate having a central aperture 13 fashioned with parallel sides, whereby to be snugly mounted on said reduced end of said head to rotate therewith.
Said cam disk or plate 12 comprises a substantially circular member having a projection 14: on one side, said projection 14 terminating in a pair of parallel jaws 15. Said jaws 15 control the movement of the latching member which latches the top and bot tom of the door. Said latching member comprises a vertical bar or rod 16 having bearings on the door frame, and passing through the casing 3 behind said parallel jaws 15. A lug or pin 17 secured on said rod or bar 16 and slidably engaging between said jaws 15, completes a sliding connection between said cam plate 12 and the latch bar 16. Said cam plate 12 being secured to said head 9, as the latter is rotated, and consequently rotating cam plate 12, the bar is raised or lowered, according to the direction of said rotation. A latch plate 18 is also carried by said head 9 and is adapted to latch the middle of said door. Said latch plate 18 constitutes a substantially rectangula r sheet fitting between the upper and lower sides of the casing 3, and having a longitudinal elliptical opening 19' formed centrally thereof by means of which said plate is collared upon said head 9 directly in front of cam plate 12 and behind the cross bar 1. Said plate 18 is provided at its forward end with a latch member 20, said member projecting through an aperture formed in the front end of easing 3, and being adapted to engage a catch or other suitable member 25, on the door frame, or the frame itself.
A recess 21 formed preferably in the upper side of the plate 18 is adapted. to receive for sliding movement a laterally projected lug 22 formed on the corresponding side of cam plate 12.. When said cam plate 12 is revolved, its movement is communicated to the plate 18, to cause it to moveprojected into the casing 3 from the housing of the locking mechanism. Said bolt, 8 is adapted, to be projected into: the path of a laterally turned projection 23 formed on the plate: 18, and is adapted to lock the latter against the movement communicated by the cam disk or plate 12'. Thus, when the latch plate 18 and latch bar 16 have been thrown tolatched position, as indicated in Fig- 2,. the key 7 may be turned to throw the bolt into its outward or locked position, when. it will project behind said projection 23, thereby preventing its backward movement, and consequently the unlatchingof the bolt 20 and bar 16.
In Fig. 7 is shown a mechanism in which a combination locking mechanism. is employed to actuate the locking bolt 8. In this instance the knob 24; is, used to. set the combination, as indicated by the figures formed in the hollow head 9, whereby the bolt 8 is operated. In all other particulars, however, the latching mechanism is identical, with that already described.
The operation of my improved lock and latch is obvious from the above, and it is evident that by means of its plurality of latching members a complete and secure faslocking mechanism, a plurality of latching members, a latch operating device, and means for en aging one of said latching members to lock the same in latchedposition, said latch operating device comprising arotatabl e head encircling said locking mechanism and a cam plate on said latch operating device having loose connections with said latching members.

and projections carried by said plate in slidable connection with said. latching means to throw said means when said head isrotated. 3. A lock, comprising, in combination, a locking mechanism, a head rota-tably mounted on said locking mechanism, a cam, plate carried by said head, a longitudinal latching member slidably mounted with: said head, a vertical latching member. slidably mounted adjacent said head, and means connecting saidv cam plate, with said, horizontal and verticat latching; members, whereby to throw said members as the head is rotated. 4:. A look, comprising, in combination, a locking mechanism, a head rotatably mounted on said locking mechanism, a longitudinal latching member, a vertical latching. member, and means carried by said head and, in connection with said vertical and longitudinal latching members, whereby to throw said members as said head is rotated. 55. A lock, comprising, in combination, a locking mechanism, a head rotatably mounted on said locking mechanism, a. cam plate; carried; by said head, a longitudinal latch plate slidably carried. by said head and slidably connected to; said cam plate, a latch bar Vertically slidable adjacent. saidcam plate and having a sliding connection therewith, and a lateral projection carried by said latch plate for interruption by a lock bolt carried, by said locking mechanism, to lock the latching members in latched position.
6. In a lock, the combination of a locking mechanism including a key-receiving barrel, a plurality of, latching members, a hollow member rotatably' fitted on said barrel, a cam plate fastened to said hollow memher and loosely connected with: all of said latching members for operating; the same, and means. also included in said locking mechanism for engaging one of said latchi-ng members to retain all of the latter in latched position.
7. In a lock, the combination of a locking mechanism including a key-receiving barrel and a bolt actuated by the key, a plurality of latching members, a hollow member rotatably fitted on said barrel, a cam plate fastened to said hollow member and loosely connected with all of said latching members for operating the same, and a projection formed upon one of said latching members and adapted to be engaged by said bolt for locking all of the latching members in latched position.
8. In a lock, the combination of a single vertically movable latch bar provided intermediate its ends With a lateral projection, a latch plate movable at right angles to said bar and provided with a latch member and with a recess, a rotatable cam provided with 15 name to this specification in the presence of 20 two subscribing witnesses.
