Description

2 Sheets--Sheet 1. A. BEA N.
Portable Furnaces. No.1'52033, y Patented]une16,1874.
UNITD STATES PATENT QFFICE.
AUGUSTUS BEAN, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,033, dated June 16, 1874; application tiled April 16, 1874.
will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. l
This invention relates to that class of devices used as attachments to stoves or ranges for cooking or other purposes, when it is def sirable to use-simply the necessaryT fuel to complete the operation, without making so large a iire as is required to raise the temperature of the common cookingstove or range to a point which will enable it to accomplish this object; and the device will be found to be a great desideratum with families, especially during the summer months, when but a small amount of cooking is required, and it is desirable to have no lire which shall heat the room where the operation is in progress; and the invention consists in a certain cylindrical vessel provided with a grate at its bottom, and suitable openings for the exit of smoke or gas at its sides, which will now be fully described, and then pointed out in th claim.
Figure l is a perspective view of the device complete. Fig. 2 presents a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a plan of the grate. Fig. 4 is a view of the under side of the cover, showing the circular opening for the utensils, and
the opening for the admission of air.
The cylinder A is of sheet or cast iron, and
lis securely attached at its upper end to an annular ring, B, of cast metal. These cylinders are made of such sizes as will allow them to pass through the ordinary openings in the tops of stoves or ranges, the ring B resting upon the top thereof, and serving to support and retain the device in position. At the lower end of the cylinder is a flange, C, turned inward, thus becoming the support for a circular grate, D, which forms the bottom of the cylinder, which is also perforated with suit= able openings c for the exit of smoke or gas, which passes oft' through the ues of the stove or range to the chimney. The cover E is of such dimension as t0 iill the opening in the top of the cylinder, and. is itself provided with an opening, b, for the admission of air to the top of the fuel, when desired. This opening is closed by a slide, c, having an orice through it of the same size as that in the cover, the slide moving in circular ways, and being retained in position by a dovetailed piece, d, which is riveted to the slide and locks it to the cover. The large circular opening in this cover E is closed by a supplementary cover, F, when not in use for cooking or other purposes. A bail, H, is attached to the annular flange B by two ears, e e, by which the whole attachment may be readily removed from the stove or range, when desired.
It will be obvious that this invention will allow the heating of water, making tea or coffee, or any of the minor operations of cookery, with the least possible amount of fuel, which is applied immediately under the article to be heated or cooked, thus avoiding the necessity of heating the whole stove or range, and raising the temperature of the room in which they are placed, as the surrounding air-spaces within the stove or range perform the function of a non-conductor, thus enabling it to be used in the warmest weather with scarcely a perceptible elevation of the temperature of the surrounding atmosphere. v
Any ordinary 'fnely-comminuted fuel may be used, as hard coal, charcoal, chips, or even sawdust; the apparatus being found to work well with either.
I am aware that portable stoves have been heretofore used, as may be seen in the patents of A. Magee,.No. 40,570, and N. O. Bond,
No. 85,054; but I do not elaiiin anything` therein. shown.
Having thus described my invention7 l claim as new7 and desire to Seenre by Let-ters Patent, the oiiowing:
A stove attachment consisting,` of the perforated cylinder A, provided with the 'frange B,bni1 II, grate D, :ind cover E, the latter having :in opening7 l), covered by the slide e,
all being combined and arranged as shown and described.
In testimony that I eiaini the foregoing` as my own I hereunto my signature in presenee of two witnesses.
AUGUSTUS BEAN.
'Witnesses WM. M. CHASE, ANSON S. B'I'ARSHALL.
