IMPROVEMENT IN STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,452, dated October 5, 1875; application filed May 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BUCKMAN GLAFLIN, of Galion, in the county of Crawford andv State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to certain improve ments in that class of stoves designed to be used during the summer months, which are constructed to be inserted into the pot-hole of an ordinary or parlor stove, and provided with draft-openings, in such manner that, when fuel is placed in the stove and lighted at the top, the draft will enter through openings in the sides of the stove, pass downwardly through the fuel, and out at openings in the bottom of the same into the stove proper, from which it passes into the smoke-escape pipe, the articles to be cooked being placed over and supported by the stove.
Prior to my invention such class of stoves has been constructed of a pot made of a single piece of cast-iron, having at its upper edge a lateral flange, so that the entire pot depends within the stove, and is supported by the lateral flange resting on the top plate of the ordinary cookingstove. Such are open to the serious objection that the walls of the pot will expand when heated, and thereby there is great liability of bursting the top plate of the ordinary cooking-stove, which my invention is designed to overcome.
To this end my invention consists of a ves' sel, or, what is a more proper name, and what I will hereafter term it, a stove, near the central part of which is formed or provided a peripheral flange or shoulder, for supporting it in the pot-hole of an ordinary cook or parlor stove, the sides of the same, beneath and above the peripheral flange, being provided with a series of draft-openings, all of which will be fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents my invention applied to an ordinary cook-stove. Fig.2 is a vertical section of my invention, showing the boiler in place, and the cover or top to the stove; and Fig. 3 is a detached view of the broiliug apparatus.
The stove A is preferably constructed of and in form it resembles an inverted truncated cone. The bottom is provided with a series of elongated openings, at, and also its lower sides, as shown at b, there being, in the present instance, two rows of the latter of difl'erent sizes. Near the middle or central part of the stove is formed or provided a projecting shoulder or peripheral flange, c, for supporting the same within the pot-hole of an ordinary cook-stove, in such manner that the side walls are not in contact with the top plate of the cooking-stove, thereby allowing of contraction and expansion. The top portion of the stove, above the peripheral flange, is provided with a rim or bead, d, and immediately beneath the same, in the side of the stove, is provided a series of openings, 0, the same being arranged at intervals entirely around the stove.
The operation of the stove thus constructed will be readily understood.
The stove is arranged in the pot-hole of an ordinary cooking-stove, and is supported therein by the peripheral shoulder or flange c at the center of the vessel, and a suificient quantity of fuel, such as charcoal, is placed in the bottom of the stove, lighted at the top, and the cover B placed over the stove. The currents of air entering the upper perforations pass down through the fuel out of the lower openings into the ordinary cook-stove, and from thence pass out through the smokepipe, a continuous draft being thus secured. It is, of course, necessary, in order to accomplish this, that the front of the cook-stove in connection with which the invention is used be closed.
In order to broil meats, to heat smoothingirons, or to support a vessel to boil vegetables, 860., I use in connection with my stove a broiler, which consists of a series of bars or wires, f, crossing each other, and confined rigidly together by means of rings g. The broiler is supported within the stove, over the fire, by means of the ends of the bars, which rest against the inner surface of the stove, which is flared outwardly near the top, to afford sufflcient support to the broiler.
Having thus described my invention, what flange, substantially as described, for the object herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
BUCKMAN OLAFLIN.
