GEORGE HENRY PRESTON, 0F LONDON, ENGLAND.
COOKING AND HEATING STOVIE.
Application filed June 1S, 1923. Serial No. 646,177.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that GEORGE HENRY Pens TON, a subject. of the King of Great Britain, residing at 3 vWillow Avenue, Barnes, London, S. W. 13, England, have invented new and useful mprovements in and Relating to Cooking and Heating Stoves, of which. the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stoves for the purpose of heating, baking, boiling, and hot water supply.
Hitherto with stoves of this description where an open Hre grate is combined with an oven and boiler, it has been found necessary to use two or three separate dampers for regulating the Hues leading from the fire direct to the chimney, to Ithe boiler, and to the oven.
In a combined stove of the before mentioned type, and according to my invention, the canopy or like Hue adjuster of the open fire grate besides regulating the Hue direct to the chimney is connected to and adapted to operate a damper for regulating both the oven and boiler Hues.
In one example, the Hues leading from the boiler and the oven are brought together or led to a divided damper box, or casing, so as to be controlled by a single damper adapted to cover one or other of the said Hues, the said damper being connected to the canopy of the open stove so as to be operated thereby in such manner that when the canopy is closed to its minimum opening the boiler Hue is open and when the canopy is fully open or approximately so the oven Hue is open and the boiler Hue is closed.
Apart from the opening and closing of the boiler Hue by Ithe damper, the boiler is preferably so arranged as to be always exposed to the fire in the Open grate so that the boiler is heated to a certain extent at all times.
The accompanying drawings show one construction of combined stove made in accordance wit-h this invention.
Fig. l is a front elevation.
F ig 2 is a plan, and
Fig. 3 a section on line X X of Figs. 1 and 2.
In the' drawings, a is an open Hre grate of the slow combustion type, b is a boiler of any usual or suitable type Htted at the back of the grate so as to be exposed to the Hre therein, c is the oven fitted against the side of the open grate, b1 is the boiler Hue which is led upwards at the. back to the front chamber 1 of a damper box d, the other and rear chamber Z2 of which -is connected by a Hue extension pipe 02 vto the oven Hue o1, which passes around the oven in the usual way.
At the side of the open grate aan opening 03 is provided communicating with a Hue 04 lwhich opens into the oven Hue 01 beneath the oven.
The damper box d isHtted with a sliding damper Z3 adapted to cover one or other of the chambers Z1 or d2. and there'- by open or close communication between the oven or boiler Hires-andthe chimney ev be,- yond.
This damper d3 is connected by a rod and bracket, or other suitable connection 71, to the adjustable canopy al of the open grate; the said canopy is of any usual or suitable construction according to the type of grate selected, for example, in some types of canopy the dampers may be connected to a cross bar fitted between the wings of the canopy instead of being connected by a rod and bracket 7L as shown, to the shutter plate a? of the said canopy.
The said shutter plate a2 and the Hre brick back a3 of the. open stove are so arranged that a minimum amount of opening is left at a* when the canopy and shutter plate are pushed inwards Ito their full extent.
It will be seen that in use. the canopy a1 of the open grate is utilized for opening or closing the oven Hue or the boiler Hue by means of the damper d3, thus allowing the three Hues to be controlled by the movement of the one part, the open Hre Hue being never entirely closed owing to the provision of the minimum opening a4.
By closing the canopy el the inward movement thereof through the connection 72, slides the damper Z3 backwards until it covers the rear chamber Z2 of the damper box l and thus shuts oH the oven Hue, and the heat instead of passing to the oven passes through the boiler Hue 51 and chamber all to the chimney e the minimum opening t4 still remaining above the open grate.
By opening the canopy the damper d3 is drawn forward so as to cover the chamber Z1 and thus open the oven Hue to the chimney e and close the boiler flue b1; the heat novT passes by the aperture c3, fine c4 under the oven to the center'thereof and then around the oven body by flue c1 and extension c2 to the chamber (Z2 and thus to the chimney e.
The opening andv closing of the canopy al thus effectively regulates the open fire and the boiler and oven iiues as required.
Amongst other advantages of the construction shown it may be mentioned that the same damper box with demper is suitable for a large or small oven and the iron cheek will suit. large. or small ovens, thel brickwork flue beneath the oven being altered accordingly. The flow `and return pipes oi the boiler may be connected to existing circulating pipes at the right or left hand of the chimney breast.
No bolts or screws need be provided to liX the oven to the. stove as the oven rest-s on the base part which is provided with the central iiue 0* and the connection toy the lue extension 02 is by a socket such as 05.
The boiler may be of any ordinary stock pattern, and the open stove may be of the slow combustion type with fire brick sections at back and sides whereby fuel is economized and the heat is radiated into the room.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A stove consisting of the combination ett' an open ire grate provided with an adjustable canopy or the like, an oven, and a boiler, iues for said oven and boiler opening together in the chimney, a damper slidable to close either said oven or said boilerI flue and connected to the canopy so as to be operated by the opening and closing movement thereof, substantially as set forth.
2. A stove consisting of the combination of an open lire grate provided with an adjustable canopy having a bracket fitted there to, an oven, and a boiler, ilues for said oven and boiler opening together in the chimney, a movable plate having' a rod connection to the bracket of the canopy and capable ot' closing or opening the oven and boiler lines by raising or lowering said canopy, substantially as set forth.
3. A stove as in claim 2, provided with. a divided damper box and damper covering the exits of the boiler and oven lues into the chimney, substantially as set forth.
Dated the ist day of J une, 1923.
GEORGE HENRY PRESTON.
