GEORGE H. GREY, '0F 'WINCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
DISPLAY BOX.
Application led August 8, 1922.
T @ZZ whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that l, Grenen l-l. GREY, of lvllinchester, in the county of Middlesex and State Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and usefnl `l'mprovement in Display Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to an improvement in display boxes and especially boxes for the packaging and display of candy.
The object of the invention is to provide a box having a cover permanently secured to the body of the box and which when open or partially open will impart to the box an attractive appearance for displaying its contents.
rllhe invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which- Fignre l is a plan of the box.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation.
Fig. 3 is a cross section, and
Fig. 4ishows the bon in section with the cover open, the dotted lines in this ligure indicating the position of the cover when partially open.
The body of the bon, preferably rectangular in form, has a bottom l, opposite ends 2 and opposite sides 3, the top being open and the opposite sides and ends being connected to one another and to the bottom, upstanding therefrom. rllhe bottom l is preferably reinforced by an outer bottom piece or plate t.
The cover is a split cover comprising separate halves 5 and 6 which meet along the median line of the body when the cover is closed. Each half of the cover has a top i', a side 8 and opposite ends l0, the side and ends being connected to one another and to the top and arranged whereby when said half is in a closed position the top will close one half of the open body of the box; the sido will fit over one side of the body of the box, and the opposite ends will tit over one half of the opposite ends of the body of the box. Each of the tops 7 is embellished, or preferably has secured to it an outer top piece or plate ll the outer face of which is embellished or otherwise decorated. The respective halves 5 and 6 of the cover are Serial No. 580,415.
hinged to the body of the box on opposite sides at the bottom thereof by means ol" flexible pieces or tapes l2 whereby each half will turn along the bottom edge presented by its Side 8.
Yvll/Titi?. a
box thus constructed there is provided a cover permanently secured to the body of 'the box and which can at all times be conveniently opened or closed.
l/Vhen the the contents.
The two halves may be maintained in a partially open position diie to the frictional contact between the ends of the respective halves of the cover and the ends of the body of the box.
In case the ends of the cover lit too loosely over the ends of the body of the box, pieces 13 of some fibrous material may be secured to the interior of the ends to the cover and these will have frictional contact with the ends of the body and thereby maintain the two halves of the cover in any adjusted partially open position.
Having thus fully described my invention, l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States :s-
A box of the type specified comprising a body having a bottoni with opposite sides and ends connected to one another and to said bottom and presenting an open top, a split cover for said body attached thereto., said cover comprising separate halves meeting along the median line of the body when the cover is closed, each half of the cover having a top with a side and opposite ends connected to one another and to said top and arranged whereby when said half is in a closed position its top will close one half of the open body of the box. its side will lit over one side of the body of the box, and its opposite ends will lit over one half of the opposite ends of the body of the box, and means for hinging said respective halves of the cover to the body of the box on opposite sides at the bottom thereof whereby each will turn along the bottom edge presented by its side.
