Patented Dec. 16, 1924.
WILLIAM DEL GRECO, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
GUARD.
Application filed July 22, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.
e it known that I, IVILLIAM DEL Gnnoo, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Guards. of which the following is a specil'ication.
This invention has for its object to pro vide means for guarding belt wheels and gear wheels for preventing persons getting their arms or their clothing caught between the belt and the pulley or between the gear wheels.
Another objectof the invention is to make the device adjustable so that it can be made to properly guard the parts when either placed on the floor or suspended from the ceiling or other support.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a front view of the device, a pulley and belt being shown in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a side view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device itself.
Figures -1- and 5 are views showing the use of the device with a pair of gears.
Figures 6 and 7 are views showing how the device may be used with belts and pulleys.
Figure 8 is a view of a device made of wire.
Figure 9 is a view showing how the d-:- vice is used with a vertically arran ed belt.
As shown in these views, the device comprises a slotted u] n'ight 1 which is supported on a base 2, the guard proper being supported on the upright by the bolt, washer and nut, which are indicated at 3. The guard, shown at 4, consists of the substantially triangular shaped wings 5 and the connecting piece 6 which is connected with the bases of the Wings. The wings are to Serial No. 576,804.
straddle the wheel and belt or the two wheels where the belt approaches the wheel or the peripheries of the wheels approach each other, with the cross piece extending across the parts, as shown. Thus a person is prevented from getting his arm or his clothes between the belt and pulley or between the two wheels. By making the device adjustable it can; be properly positioned in relation to the parts to be guarded and instead of placing the guard on an upright it may be placed on a part which is depending from the ceiling, as shown. in the upper part of Figure 6. The device may be formed of sheet material or of wire as shown in Figure 8.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts. provided that such changes tall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
1. A guard For preventing objects being drawn between two wheels or between a pulley and a belt comprising a pair of side wings having tapering edges for covering the ends of the space between two approaching elements, a cross piece connecting the large ends oi the wings together and covering the front oi said space and a support for the guard, said cross piece being oi. less width than the large ends of the wines.
2. A guard for preventing objects being drawn between two wheels or between a pulley and a belt comprising a pair of side wings having tapering edges for covering the ends of the space between two approaching elements, a. cross piece c nnecting the large ends of the win fs together and covering the front of said space. a support for the guard, Sttl il cross piece being of less width than the large ends of the wings. said support consisting of an upright and means for adjustably connecting the guard. o the same.
In testimony whereof I aflix my nature.
sig-
IVILLIAM DEL GREGG.
