A.COHEN SAFETY DEVICE FOR WINDOW CLEANERS f Filed July 26. 1923 Patented July 15, 1924.
ANCHEL COHEN, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
SAFETY DEVICE ron WINDOW CLEANERS.
Application filed July 26, 1923. Serial N0..653,876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANcHEL COHEN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for WVindow Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a supporting 7 device for window cleaners and important objects thereof are to provide a device of the class stated which may be readily attached to windowsof variouswidths which comprises a platform and guard whereby the operation of cleaning windows may be performed at any elevation with comparative ease and safety, and which embodies novel means for locking the platform and guard in either the erected or the collapsed or folded position.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of the character described, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable and efficient in its use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing forming a portion of this specification and wherein like numeral of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sup porting device for window cleaners in accordance with my invention, attached to a window with a portion of the latter broken away.
Figure 2 is a sectional side view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional end view of the device in the collapsed or folded position.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the locking member.
Referring in detail to the drawing 1 denotes the ordinary window frame of a building structure to the outside of which my improved supporting device is adapted to be attached. 7
The supporting device comprises a hori- Zontally and flatly disposed platform 2 and an edgewise extending guard member 8 positioned at right angles with respect to the platform 2. The platform 2 and guard member 3 are preferably constructed from wood and are connected together by a pair of strap hinges 4 whichare positioned on the inner face of the platform 2 and of the guard member 3 to allow them to be folded together inwardly. The strap hinges 4 extend transversely across the respective faces of the platform 2 and guard member 3 for the purpose of reinforcement.
The supporting device is attached tothe window frame 1 by means of two pairs of chains indicated at 5 and 6 respectively; The pair of chains 6 have their outer ends attached to an I-bolt 7 which latter are fixed in the respective end edges of the guard member 3 adjacent to the top thereof. The inner ends of the pair of chains 6 are attached in the hooks 8, provided therefor in the vertical members of the window frame 1.
The pair of chains 5 have their outer ends attached to an I-bolt 9 which latterare fixed in respective end edges of the platform 2. The inner ends of the pair of chains 5 are attached in the hooks 10 provided therefor in the vertical members of the window frame 1 adjacent to the lower end thereof.
The pairs of chains 5 and 6 are of ample length to permit of their adjustable attachment with respective hooks 8 and 10 to properly position the device relatively to the window frame, as the links constituting the pairs of chains 5 and 6 are such as to allow their connection with the hooks 8 and 10.
A. locking element is provided adjacent to each end of the device for the purpose of securing the platform 2 and guard member 3 in either the operative or folded positions.
Each of the locking elements comprises a vertically disposed bracket 11 having an outwardly extending apertured foot 12 and is mounted and fixedly secured to the upper face of the platform 2 by means of the bolts 13 which extend through the apertured foot 12 and engage the platform 2. Pivotally connected, as at 14, to the upper end of the bracket 11, is an outwardly projecting bar 15, at the outer end of which a latch 16 is pivotally connected, as at 17.. The outer end of portion of the bar 15, adjacent to its connection 17 with the lat-ch 16, has itslow: er face recessed to form a shoulder 18 for the purpose to be described.
A vertically disposed slot 19. is formedin the guard member 3 adjacent to each end thereof for the passage ofrespective locking element therethrough.
Wheu the platform 2 and guard memberix are in the erected position for use as illjustrated in Figures 1 and 2, of-the. drawing, the bars extend through respective. slots 19 with the shoulders 18 thereof abutting gage the outer face of the guardmember-3 and the latch 16is positioned to engagethe underface of the platform 2, whereby the platform and guard member are locked in the folded position.
It will be notedthat the position of the bracket foot 12 will allow of its entering the slot 19 ofthe guard member 3 When the latter is folded flatly against the platform 2. The construction of the pivotal connection 1 1- joining the bracket 11 with the bar 1-5 is such as to permit of its passage, through the slot 19 when the guard member 3 is shifted to the erected or to the collapsed position.
What I claim is:-
A device for the purpose set forth comprising a platform, a guard member hingedl connected thereto and formed with a pair of vertically disposed slots, a locking element mounted on said platform and extending through each ofsaidslots, said ele meut including a bar formed with a shoulder and a latch for locking said platform and said member in the erected position, substantially as described and for the purpose setforth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
