To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEREMIAH a citizen of the United States, residing at WVest Union, in the county of Adams and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVire-StretChing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to appliances adapted to be used in conjunction with stretchers for connecting the same with wire netting and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide an appliance of the character indicated, which is of simple and durablestructure and which may effectually engage the mesh of a woven wire fence, and holdthe same in a stretched condition transversely while it is being stretched longitudinally.
With the above object in view the applian'ce includes a bar having links connected thereto for the purpose of attaching the bar to the chain of a wire stretcher. Hooks are mounted at intervals upon the bar and the bills of some of the hooks are disposed in one direction while the bills of the other hooks are disposed in anopposite direction. These hooks are adapted to engage in the mesh of the fence fabric and they hold the fabric stretched transversely while it isbeing stretched longitudinally. 1
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is aside elevation of the appliance. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of'the several features thereof.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the appliance includes a bar 1 which is preferably of wood approximately four feet in length and about two by four inches in transverse dimension. Eyes 2 are located at ne side of the bar 1 and links 3 are pivotally connected at one end with the said eyes. A ring 4 is loosely held'between the other ends of the links and through the said ring the chain of a wire stretcher may be inserted.
Hooks 5 are mounted at intervals upon the bar 1. Thesaid hooks are preferably made from flat sheet metal, as for instance wheel tire iron. Each hook is provided at one end with a loop 6 which practically surrounds Specification of Letters Patent.

the bar 1 and lies in close contact with the sides and edges thereof. Bolts 7 pass transversely through the opposite sides of the loops 6 and the bar 1 and serve as means for holding the hooks 5 in position upon the bar. Each hook 5 is provided with a bill end 8 which is disposed beyond one side of the loop 6. The bills 8 ofsome of the hooks are disposed toward one side of the bar 1 while the bills of the other hooks. are disposed toward the opposite side of the said bar.

When the appliance is in use the, bills 8 of the hooks 5' are inserted through the meshvof a woven wire fence fabric, and inasmuch as the bills of some of'the hooks are disposed in one direction, and the bills of the other hooks in an opposite direction, the fabric is securely held in position with relation to the bar. When a pulling action is exerted upon the bar, the fence is stretched longitudinally and inasmuch as the hooks 5 are spaced from each other along the bar they will hold the fence fabric stretched in a direction longitudinally of the bar or transversely of the fabric. vHence it will be seen that a wire fence stretching appliance is provided and that the device is of simple and durable structure and may be used to advantage for efiiciently stretching a wire fabric longitudinally, for the purpose of se- 1 curing the same to a series of posts.
' Having described the'invention what is claimed is A wire stretcherv comprising a bar, means for connecting the bar with a stretching device, hooks fiXedly mounted at intervals upon the bar, said hooks being formed from relatively thin and broad'material, the hooks having loops which approximately surround the bar, the hooks also having bill ends lo cated beyond, the same edge of the bar, the bill ends of each altern'ate hook being disposed in the same general direction and the bill ends of the other hooks being disposed in an oppositedirection. v i In testimony whereof I, affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
