Be it known that I, MARTIN E. LIVING- SlON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Livingston, in the county of Over ton and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in wire stretchers, an object being to provide a device which may be securely and quickly clamped upon a woven wire fabric or the like, so that the latter may be easily and effectually stretched during the erection of a fence or enclosure.

Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the device may be readily adjusted for different widths of fence wire fabric, the adjusting means effectually holding the parts in position.

A further object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the wire fabric may be properly stretched in a short time and with a minimum amount of labor.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings Figure 1 is an elevation showing a fragmentary portion of a wire fence fabric with the invention applied.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the same.

Figure 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3-45 of Figure 1.

Figure 1 is a similar view on the line 4% of Figure 1.

Figure 6 is a detail elevation of one of the bars of the clamp.

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the invention as shown comprises a clamp which includes a pair of complemental clamping bars 10 which are provided with spaced openings 11 for the passage of bolts 12, the latter serving to connect the bars whereby they may be clamped upon opposite sides of a wire fence fabric 13 as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. Each of the bars 10 are provided with longitudinally spaced eyes 14 which extend along one edge of the bars. These eyes are preferably formed by a strip of metal bent into loop formation as clearly shown in Figure 6 of the drawings so as to provide the eyes 14 for the passage of a clevis bolt 15, the latter serving to secure a clevis 16 to the clamping bars. By providing the spaced eyes 1 1, the clevis may be adjustably secured longitudinally of the clamping bars so as to properly position the clevis for fence fabric of different widths, whereby the line of pull of the stretcher may be properly regulated.

The stretcher further includes a take-up bar 17 which is preferably of tubular construction and which has secured thereto spaced loops or clevises 18 from which extend take-up chains 19, the latter being provided at their outer ends with hooks 20. These hooks are adapted to engage the links of a chain 21 which is carried by the clevis 16 and which is connected to the clamping bars through the medium of this clevis. Also connected to the take-up bar .17 between the chains 19 is a clevis or latch 22 from which extends a chain 23, the latter being adapted to be secured around an anchor post 24- and carrying a book 25 for engagement with the links of the chain 23 An operating bar or handle 26 is provided. This operating bar or handle carries spaced rings 27 which are adapted to receive the take-up bar as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 2 of the drawings, so that when the stretcher has been secured in place, the takeup bar may be rocked to alternately engage the hooks 20 of the spaced chains 19 with the links of the chain 21 This will provide for stretching the fence fabric 13, as will be readily understood The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is here- J11 reserved to make such changes as proper- ]y "fall Within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described the invention What is claimed is A Wire stretcher comprising a clamp including spaced clamping bars, means whereby the bars may be clamped together, 10nszitudinally spaced eyes extending along one edge of each bar, a clevis adapted to re- 10 ceive the bars, a clevis pin adapted to extend through the eyes for adjustably securing the clevis to the clamping bars, a chain secured to the clevis, and means associated With the chain to provide stretching means.
