PAPER HANDKERCHIEF PACKAGE Filed Aug. ILS, 1922 2 lfmseshei l DQQ. 99 E924@ E. W. WQCD PAPER HANDKERCHIEF FACKAGE Filed Aug. l9, 1922 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 ,To all 'whom it may Patented Dec. 9, A1924.
UNITED STATES EARL W. WOOD, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
PAYER-HANDKERCHIEF PACKAGE Application led August 19, 1922. Serial No. 582,984.
cof/wem.'
Be it known that I, vEARL W. WOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Handkerchief Packages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toilet articles and more particularly to paper handkerchief packages.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a compact, substantial, practicable and inexpensive package consisting of a foldable receiver and a pad of paper squares of suitable material, preferably of paper, to be utilized as handkerchiefs.
vIt is an object furtherto provide a receiver capable of being readily carried in the pocket and which is provided with a flap whereby a pad of paper handkerchiefs can be neatly covered and protected and which at the same time enables the ready removal of the handkerchiefs as desired.
Another object is to provide a handkerchief package incorporating means for perfuming .the handkerchiefs.
Another object is to provide a handkerchief receiver and holder havin an individual pocket for receiving use handkerchiefs as may be necessary.
Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of the embodiments of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the package in closed position.
Figure 2 is a perspective showing the handkerchief covering flap unfolded to expose the paper handkerchiefs and showing the spare pocket flap opened.
Figure 3 is a section from top to bottom of the closed package. l, Y
Figure 4 is a transverse section on lino 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a plan of the blank of the corner ear.
Figure 6 is a perspective of a portion of the receiver showing the method of attaching the blank to the receiver body.
Figure 7 isk a perspective of the front of a modified form of package.
Figure 8 is a perspective the modified package.
Figure 9 is a perspective of the unfolded of the back of package showing a four section handkerchief.
Figure 10 is a section from top to bottom of the fcldcd package of Figure 7.
Flgure 11 is a plan of a six section handkerchief package.
The device is preferably built up of flexible material, such, for instance, as tenacious paper having the desirable wearing qualitv and the main body consists of an inner oi' back sheet 2, the bottom of which is rolled at 3 and extends upwardly to form a flap 4, the corners of which may be tucked in under retaining devices in the form of ears 5,
one of the blanks of which is shown in .Fi-'1- ure 5 as having a 'rug 6 adapted to be folded in and adhesively secured to the contiguous overhanging forward portion of the upper end of the back 2. This upper end has a fold 2a transversely across the top of the receiver and this is folded forwardly and down as at 2b and is then reversed to form an inner stri 2C. The superposed folds 2b and 2c form t erebetween a shallow channel which may be filled with any suitable perfuming material, such, for instance, as a sachet powder which may sift through a line of apertures 7 provided in the crease along the folds 2b and 2c.
Between the folded strip 2c and the adjacent portion of the back 2 there is irmlv held, preferably adhesively, the top end of a pad of leaves or sheet 10 preferably of a suitable paper stock that maybe adapted for handkerchief service. The upper ends of the sheets or handkerchiefs 10 are perforated as at 11 to facilitate the separation of each of the handkerchiefs from the fastened stub of the pad.
t The handkerchiefs are of suitable proportions and are preferably folded medially so as to be bent up and then covered by the overlaid outside flap 4.
Ordinarily the handkerchiefs after being used may be discarded but there may be certain occasions when it would not be practicable to discard the handkerchiefs and in such case they may be concealed in a pocket provided for that purpose and forming a portion of the package.
The pocket consists of an outer wall 12 having pleated top and bottom ,transverse 'ianges 13 with inturned lips 14 adhesively or otherwise secured to the back 2. One end of the outer wall 12 may be provided with an inwardly turned flap 15, as shown in Figure 4, to form a bottom closure for the pocket and the opposite end of the Wall 12 is provided with an inwardly turned flap 16 which has a pull piece or finger strip 17. This enables the pulling of the flap 16 outwardly to uncover the end of the waste pocket under the Wall l2 so as to permit the insertion of the used handkerchiefs after which the cover flap 16 may be restored to covering position.
A somewhat modified form of the invention is illustrated in Figures 7 to 11 inclusive. In this form of the invention the pad of handkerchiefs comprises a number 0f handkerchief sheets 10Ll having right angularly intersecting or crossing fold lines a and b of Figure 9 and a, b and c of Figure 11. The handkerchief sheet of Figure 9 consists of four quadrangles adapted to be folded in compact position one upon the other as to each handkerchief, while in Figure 11 a handkerchief sheet consists of six quadrangular sections. rlhe sheet of Figure 11 provides a central stub portion 10b having a row of perforations 11 for the medial set of sections of each handkerchief, there being two lateral sections flanking the medial sections on each side.
Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the spirit of the invention as here claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A paper handkerchief and cover structure comprising a pad of sheets attached at one end to the cover, said pad being transversely folded on itself, and said cover including a ap to cover the folded pad, the cover having corner ears under which the flap corners are retainable.
2. A package consisting of a receiver structure, and a pad of paper handkerchiefs attached to said structure, the receiver structure including a stub holding part and a flap end to fold up over the folded pad, the stub holding end of the receiver having retaining means for holding the flap in closed position, said retaining means consisting 0f ears fastened to the top of the receiver and under which the corners of the flap may be tucked in.
3. A package consisting of a receiver structure, and a pad of paper handkerchiefs attached to said structure, the receiver structure including a back having its upper transverse edge double folded to form a channel overlying the applied pad and adapted to receive a perfuming substance.
4. A package consisting of a receiver structure, and a pad of paper handkerchiefs attached to said structure, the receiver structure including a back having its upper transverse edge double folded to form a channel overlying the applied pad and adapted to receive a perfuming substance, the double folded portion having apertures through which the said substance may sift.
5. A package consisting of a receiver structure, and a pad of paper handkerchiefs attached to said structure, the said receiver being provided with a spare pocket at its back to receive 'used handkerchiefs.
6. A package consisting of a receiver structure, and a pad of paper handkerchiefs attached to said structure, the said receiver being provided with a spare pocket at its back to receive used handkerchiefs, said spare pocket having a closed end and having its opposite end provided with a pull flap for closing its end of the pocket.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
EARL W. WOOD.
