isiaazo GILBERT J. GATES, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT 0F COLUMBIA.
sonar-Ine IMPLEMENT.
Appncation filed January 31, 1924. serial No. 689,806.
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT J. GATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scraping Implements, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. Y
This invention relates to certain impro-vements in scraping implements and has relation more particularly to al device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in the removing of wall paper or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved implement of this kind embodying a scraping blade together with means for treating the paper in advance of the blade to facilitate the functioning of the blade.
litisalso an object of the invention to provide an implement of this general character provided with means forapplying moisture to the paper in advance vof the scraping blade together with means for vaporizing such applied moisture to facilitate the removal of the p-aper.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar'- rangement of the several parts of my -iniproved scraping implement whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set fort The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
in order that my invention may be the better understood, l will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a View in front elevation of'an implement constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view' taken through the device as illustrated in Fig- Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating in detail the means for adjusting the scrapingblade.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawv ings, B denotes =a`ho1low body preferably rectangular'in form and which has its lower longitudinal marginal portion completely enclosed to provide a tank T adapted to contain a supply of water or other suitable liquid. The tank T has in communication therewith the filling opening 1 normally closed b the plug 2. The body B immediately a jacent to the tank T is provided therealongr4 with a depression 3 concave in cross section, said depression providing a heating chamber 4. Arranged within the chamber 4c and extending substantially the entire length thereof is a heating element E of an electrical type and which is adapted to be coupled to a suitable source of electrical energy through the conduit 13.
The forward or working face of the body B immediately adjacent to the depression 3 and at the side thereof remote from the tank T is provided with a slot 5 through which is extended the cutting marginal portion of the scraping blade 6. The cutting edge of the blade 6 is adapted to be projected beyond the working face of the body B- to the extent desired and while not preferred, means may be employed for this adjustment of the blade 6 as disclosed in the accompanying drawings, and have operatively engaged with each end portion of the blade a shank 7, said shank being disposed through the upper wall 8 of the body B and threaded through the upstanding sleeve or collar 9 carried thereby. The outer end portion of the shank 7 is provided with an operating member 10 whereby the shank 7 may be rotated as required in order to effect the desired adjustment of the blade 6.
Each of the shanks 7,' as is particularly illustrated in Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings, is in swivelled connection with the blade 6 or more particularly thebacking strip carried thereby, said swivelled connection being preferably of a ball and socket t e. yfpihe forward wall of the tank T has provided therealong and extending the major distance' thereof a slot 11 through which partially projects the roller R, the peripheral portion 12 of which bein of an absorbent character. The roller serves -to close the ope-ning 11 .but as they implement is drawn over a wall or other surface, the projected portion of the roller R is in contact with such wall and serves to apply moisture to the wall in a quantity sufficient to penetrate the paper. `At the same time, the heat in the implement E serves to vaporize such applied moisture which in itself has a further tendency to free the paper especially in view of the sudden expansion of the moisture. The blade 6 serves to scrape the paper from the Wall.
The device is adapted to be manually operated and as herein disclosed, the rear wall of the body B is provided with an outstanding bracket or bail 14 with which is operatively engaged a handle member 15 of desired length.
From the foregoing `description it is thought to be obvious that a scraping implement constructed inV accordance with my invention is particularly `well 4adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be Vobviousv that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself tolthe precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
i I claim 1. An implement of the class described comprising a body, moisture applying means carried thereby, heat generating means carried by the body, and a sc aping means carried by the body, the. hea generating means being interposed between the moisture applying means and the scraping means.
2. An implement of the class described comprising a body, moisture applying means carried thereby, heat generating means carried by the body, a scraping means carried by the body, said moisture applying means comprising a chamber adapted to contain a supply of fluid, the wall of said chamber having an opening, and a roller rotatably supported Within the chamber, a portion thereof being disposed through the opening to substantially close the same.
3. An implement of the class described comprising a body, moisture applying means carried thereby, heat generating' means carried by the body, a scraping means carried by the body, said moisture applying means comprising a chamber adapted to contain a supply of fluid, the Wall of said chamber having an opening, and a roller rotatably supported Within the chamber, a portion thereof being disposed through the opening to substantially close the same, the peripheral portion of the'roller being ab sorbent.
4. An' implement of the class described comprising a body, moisture applying means carried thereby, heat generating means carried by the body, a scraping means carried by the body, said heat generating means comprising a chamber provided in a Wall of the body, the outer face being open, and a heating element within said chamber.
An implement of the class described comprising a` body, moisture applying means carried thereby, heat generating means car ried by the body, a scraping means carried by the body, said heat generating means comprising a chamber provided in a wall of the body, the outer face being open, and a heating element Within said chamber, said chamber being concave in cross section.
6. An implement for the removal of Wall coverino` comprising a body, means carried by the cbody for applying moisture to the covering, means carried by the body for vslipcrizing said moisture after being app 1e 7. An implement for the removal of Wall covering comprising abody, means carried by the body for applying moisture to the covering, means carried by the body for Vaporizing said moisture after being appied, and a scraping means carried by the Iii testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix `my signature.
